PA Manager, Advanced Practice Providers



The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking a Physician Assistant Manager. Reporting to the Vice Director of Clinical Operations within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, the Manager, Orthopaedic Advanced Practice Provider (APP Manager) will provide operational oversite to Advanced Practitioners (14 APP staff). This includes managing exempt level staff, developing policies/procedures and quality assurance programs. This position is also responsible for administrative tasks involving Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner scheduling, training, credentialing, and evaluation.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:


Administrative Duties:

  • Requests consultations with other departments, as necessary.
  • Acts as liaison with Finance, Billing, Access Center and other Department stakeholders.
  • Develops and establishes new workflow procedures and standards to improve efficiency and effectiveness within the Division. Development and coordination of clinic staffing and patient care schedules; manages all NP, PA and clinical support staff activities, including recruitment and hiring, training, scheduling, supervision, records and evaluation.
  •  Responds to inquiries from patients/parents or refer to Leadership.
  •  Oversees all credentialing and peer chart review activities.
  • Monitors, approves and coordinates APP staff education and training, including CME, compliance and other.
  • Advises faculty and staff about changes in applicable policies and procedures.
  • Keeps abreast of regularly scheduled continuing education programs to ensure current APP knowledge of procedures and health care plans and protocols.
  • Facilitates communication between own team and other overlapping divisions.
  • Approves e210 time records.
  • Coordinates location and workspace for all APP staff.


Advanced Practitioner Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interview patients and compiles patient medical histories to assist in determination of health status.
  • Perform physical examinations of patients, noting normal and abnormal findings. Obtain specimens from patients and runs routine laboratory tests and procedures; performs diagnostic tests, orders non-routine laboratory tests or procedures as required.
  • Analyze and evaluates patient history, physical examination findings and laboratory values, and makes preliminary diagnosis of patients for review by physician. Develop care/treatment plan for patient according to established protocols and procedures; confers and consults with supervisory physician and other professionals before implementing treatment.


Perform procedures as required such as starting I.V. lines, applying plaster casts, traction and splints, assisting in placement of tubes, and suturing cuts and wounds. Prepare patient for surgery by shaving, scrubbing and draping surgical field following sterile techniques. Insert monitoring equipment such as urinary catheters and temperature probes. Assist physicians during surgical procedures.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing. Three (3) years’ experience in related clinical area, and obtained proficiency in area of specialty. Prefer at least 5 years related experience. Supervisory experience preferred. Residency or fellowship programs in area of specialization may substitute for some experience. Must be registered by the Board of Medical Examiners of Maryland. Current CPR certification required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Bayview Medical Center credentialing process is required prior to start date.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Computer knowledgeable and will be expected to fully utilize all Johns Hopkins systems.
  • Work requires the analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems, or design relatively complex systems and programs that cross department/division lines.
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations. Work requires individual to demonstrate team player and leadership skills to manage and develop all APP staff within the division. Extraordinary customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability for self-direction and initiation required.


 Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, Chemistry, Psychology, Pharmacology, Clinical Medicine,Radiology, Microbiology and Pathology as acquired through completion of an accredited Physician's Assistant program.
  • Advanced Practitioner work requires six-to-twelve month’s on-the-job experience to have a comprehensive understanding of clinical and/or surgical procedures, patient care procedures, medical protocols and testing procedures.
  • Work requires analytical ability necessary to evaluate and determine health status of patient and implement proper care plan. Interpersonal skills necessary to interview, teach and counsel patients; instruct health care personnel on procedures and treatment.


Physical Requirements: 

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
