PMAP Cloud Infrastructure Engineer

IT@JH Technology Innovation Center is seeking a Software Engineer  who will be responsible for the creation, implementation, maintenance, performance, production support and documentation of various departmental and enterprise-wide application systems. This includes but is not limited to the installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications (packages or home grown), operating systems, file structures, hardware, communication devices, and productivity tools. Applies analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications and designs. Using functional specifications and designs, produces all or part of the deliverables. Maintains databases and application system code.

The Technology Innovation Center (TIC) is uniquely positioned within Johns Hopkins to help design, build, and deploy novel enterprise, departmental, and clinical applications that strive to improve workflow, outcomes, and patient care. Our applications focus on turning data and algorithms into useful visualization tools, improving workflows such as research, patient hand-off, rounding, and cross-team collaboration, and helping patients with medication adherence, data gathering, and overall clinical education. Our team frequently works with data from multiple sources including our Enterprise EMR (Epic), researcher curated data, and other systems. The applications we design, build, and support are critical to our healthcare operations and require high-availability, 24/7 monitoring, and on-call support.

PMAP Cloud Infrastructure Engineer Requirements

  • Strong understanding of compute, network, storage and virtualization concepts
  • Working knowledge of basic cloud infrastructure and networking with a focus on high availability
  • Microsoft Azure cloud management and administration including environment provisioning, configuration, performance monitoring and security
  • Experience with containers and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with cloud deployment and tooling
  • Has familiarity with a handful of development languages, but has expertise in one or two languages
  • Familiarity with cross-platform development tools and techniques
  • Experience supporting a variety of multi-person projects simultaneously
    • Comfortable switching gears depending on business requirements
  • Experience taking ownership of 2-3 established applications and/or systems
  • One or more technical degrees from an accredited university
  • Bonus: Engineering experience in healthcare IT
  • Bonus: Experience setting up development operations (DevOps) for new and existing projects and/or familiarity with Git, CI/CD tooling (e.g. Azure DevOps, Atlassian Bamboo), build tools (e.g. Maven, Gradle, npm), and associated process automation
  • Bonus: Familiarity or experience implementing Configuration as Code and Infrastructure as Code

General summary/purpose

This position will be responsible for providing Microsoft Azure cloud management and administration that directly supports the ongoing development of the Precision Medicine Analytics Platform (PMAP), including the deployment of end-to-end cloud solutions that leverage a variety of Microsoft Azure PaaS/IaaS technologies and supporting middleware, with a strong focus on automation.


Specific duties & responsibilities

The PMAP Discovery Platform allows researchers to make discoveries from a unified data lake, and focuses on tools for researchers. The PMAP Delivery Platform is comprised of clinical applications that leverage PMAP aggregated data and Discovery output, and focuses on tools for clinicians, other care providers, and patients.


As a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer, the position will be expected to participate in a wide array of cloud and DevOps engineering activities, and participate in geographically disparate and cross-disciplinary teams, tasked to plan and deliver new capabilities during each Program Increment.

The Cloud Infrastructure Engineer should expect to provision and provide guidance for the adoption and support of Azure-based architectural components, and ongoing operational support of the PMAP v2 Discovery and Delivery Platforms. The position will be responsible for provisioning, configuring, and securing cloud-based solutions and components according to Enterprise and institutional security policies and best practices, and performing Identity and Access Management systems management as appropriate. The position will work closely the Director of Product Development, the PMAP Core Team, and other PMAP and TIC Leadership to identify and prioritize deliverables based on clinical and research needs.


Current and upcoming initiatives include but are not limited to:

  • Enhance and Maintain the Shiny Proxy AKS cluster to support rapid deployment of research prototypes and development efforts by PMCoEs
  • Help provide infrastructural support for PMAP Genomics efforts

  • Partner with a clinical champion to identify and study the primary audiences

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Information Technology, Electronic Engineering, or a related field. Additional experience may be substituted for education.
  • Five years of related work experience with computer systems and applications. Additional education may substitute for experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge in the assigned application as well as the platform on which it runs.
