General Description:

Payroll Shared Services provides payroll processing and accounting services for Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System, which consists of multiple employers. Payroll Shared Services activities include but are not limited to the routine processing of weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly and off cycle payrolls utilizing the SAP payroll module. Other integrated activities include garnishment processing, time systems management including interfaces from Kronos and Nightingale, remittances to 3rd party vendors, and financial reporting.

This position supports the payroll services as defined in the HR/PY Share Services Service Level Agreement and oversees the daily operations of the staff of Payroll Shared Services. The incumbent in this position reports to the payroll managers to cover a variety of overlapping activities.  Due to the breadth of the position’s responsibilities across a variety of employers with distinct and complex systems and policies, the ability to collaborate with staff in a variety of departments is essential. 

This position is responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll and other related processes.  They will assist with the hiring, supervision and development of PYSS staff.  They will determine appropriate solutions to payroll and accounting problems resulting from payroll transactions.  The incumbent in this position participates in the implementation of system changes such as SAP upgrades, support packs, tax update bulletins and general maintenance tasks. They will be expected to develop and document standard operating procedures for evaluation and if required develop and execute planned changes intended to gain improved accuracy and efficiency.  The incumbent will also assist the payroll managers with the analysis of various payroll data and/or completion of departmental projects such as internal and external annual audits and follow-up communications with garnishment vendors for State and Federal agencies.


  • Bachelor’s in Finance, Account, Business or related field and five years of progressively responsible experience.
  • Requires knowledge of accounting theory and practice including internal controls; experience with federal and multi-state payroll regulations including tax, compensation and benefit.
  • Knowledge of complex computer systems as well as PC office software (Excel and Word); excellent time management skills.
  • Results-oriented person with ability to understand the need for flexible processes.
  • Excellent general management skills including innovative human resource development.
  • Ability to work independently and on simultaneous projects and/or delegate, as appropriate, to staff.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze issues and conceptualize solutions, as well as establish, implement and communicate procedures and policies in a clear and concise manner.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
