The General Pediatrics Division of The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Physician Assistant on a part-time (2 days/week) basis, to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health team including members of the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Gynecology & Obstetrics at Bayview Medical Center. The PA will be responsible for providing comprehensive gynecologic and reproductive health care, and primarily contraceptive counseling and services, to adolescent patients (ages 12-24) at the Children’s Medical Practice at Bayview.

 

This provider will practice within the guidelines of the departments, and the Institution in accordance with the Written Agreements required and approved by the State of Maryland. The Physician Assistant is granted affiliate staff privileges by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center; these privileges are reviewed annually. S(he) is responsible to the preceptor and department head for nursing and clinical standards and practice. S(he) will report to the Medical Director of the Children’s Medical Practice, and will work closely with faculty in the Division of Family Planning in the Department of GYN/OB.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:  Provides care to adolescent and young adult females primarily as it relates to contraception and reproductive health care. Care may also include some general adolescent health maintenance, and other female related issues, in a timely, professional, and friendly manner. Independently provides the range of contraceptive counseling and methods, including insertion and removal of intrauterine devices (IUD) and implants. Provides independent management of adolescent GYN complaints, including counseling, testing, diagnosis, treatment, and/or follow-up, referring patients appropriately to other physician providers as needed, in the case of issues too complex or complicated to be managed by the physician assistant. Performs some health screening, orders, performs and interprets tests.

 

Establishes medical and nursing diagnoses; orders, performs and evaluates diagnostic studies; performs and monitors relevant therapeutic procedures; assesses and/or manages follow-up plans. Performs follow-up visits on adolescent females, including but not limited to contraceptive follow-up, physical examinations, microscopy and screening for sexually transmitted infections, bacterial vaginosis and cervical cancer (when age-appropriate). Documents patient chart information as needed, including but not limited to problem identification, treatment and follow-up, and other program forms as needed. Records and documents health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate, and/or expedite required services.

 

Provides consultation and collaboration with and referral to physician colleagues as indicated, for contraception and other reproductive health concerns in the pediatric/adolescent clinic. Prescribes and regulates medications per written agreement. Reviews laboratory, radiology and other reports and provides for appropriate treatment and follow-up as indicated. Reports abnormal patient findings to appropriate physician colleagues and is responsible for coordinating the reporting of all STDs to state agencies, as indicated and appropriate.

 

Supports clinical activities of the Children’s Medical Practice, by providing patient and family education, developing teaching materials and other support activities as time permits. Assumes responsibility and accountability for time management, professional relationships and interpersonal interactions. Develops, conducts, and/or evaluates formal or informal in-service and continuing education programs in areas of expertise for peer groups and other disciplines.

 

Assumes responsibility for his/her own professional development and remains current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education. Participates in department, functional unit, and Hospital committees, as assigned. Serves as clinical preceptor for nursing students, including nurse practitioner or nurse midwife candidates as time permits. Participates in the development and implementation of quality assurance program. Adheres to Hospital and nursing policies and procedures. May be required to work at other JHU/JHH GYN/OB outpatient facilities as needed.

 

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body (or certification-eligible for new graduates).  Completion of a CAAHEP certified Physician Assistant program. Must be licensed as PA in State of Maryland or other state where practicing.  Experience may be considered in lieu of bachelor's degree, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula. Current CPR certification required.  Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.  Completion of the BMC credentialing process is required prior to start date.   

 

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

 

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:  Experience and capability to use electronic medical records.  Insertion and removal of hormonal and copper intrauterine devices (IUD) and contraceptive implant.

 

Technical Qualifications:   Six months of related experience.  One (1)- two (2) years of previous experience preferred. Fluency in Spanish language preferred.
