General Description:


The Johns Hopkins Institution seeks a Principal Gifts Senior Writer to support Development and Alumni Relations units across the university in the pursuit of major philanthropic revenue opportunities. Reporting to the Director for Principal Gifts and working closely with the Associate Vice President for Principal Gifts, this individual will assist in articulating Johns Hopkins priorities in ways that increase support throughout the institution with a focus on strategies and proposals of $5 million or more. This position entails working with key institutional leaders and faculty (and their development offices) to describe their visions and identified needs into viable proposals.


Primary Responsibilities:


  • (50%) Develops proposals of $5 million and above based on best practice and involving key stakeholders.
  • Performs significant independent research and development of written and visual materials on large-scale projects in the early planning stages (from programmatic centers to facilities), requiring the utmost discretion and diplomacy in interacting with high-level administrators and faculty members throughout the institution.
  • Oversees and executes the proposal input, drafting, and review process for principal gift-level donors.
  • Manages the associate writer of principal gifts.


  • (35%) Directs the briefings team and oversees the briefing process by working collaboratively with appropriate development officers across the institution to gather necessary information to research, compose, and edit briefing documents for use by the president and other university officials for meetings and events.
  • Manages principal gifts development coordinator.
  • Serves as a liaison between divisions and the Office of the President, including presidential speechwriting team.


  • (10 %) Conducts professional development and informational sessions with colleagues across Johns Hopkins. Initiates and oversees training activities with individuals, divisions, and units to manage expectations of what the president and other university leadership require for briefing materials. Develops and implements new briefing processes and oversees communication to appropriate Development and Alumni Relations staff.


  • (5%) Performs other duties as assigned.




  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Three years related experience required.
  • Five to seven years of experience in a related field, such as English, Communications, or Marketing preferred.  
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing, editing and communications skills; ability to handle multiple tasks and problem solve, as well as adapt to changing priorities; and the ability to organize large amounts of information and write concisely and accurately within a limited time frame.
  • Management experience.


Candidates are required to submit 2-3 writing samples along with resume and cover letter.


Preferred Qualifications:


Familiarity with fundraising is preferred.  Experience in higher education and/or health writing is desirable.
