Production Assistant


Position Description

Reporting to the Production Services Manager, the Production Assistant will assist the production team with all  technical aspects of Peabody concert and events for both the Conservatory and the Preparatory to support over 1000 events, including master classes, rehearsals, performances (music and dance), and student recitals including Opera Theater.


Acts as a liaison among the various individuals involved in a production, including the conductor, artistic directors, musicians, dancers, technical department, and the concert and ensembles team to ensure an excellent and safe production.   






Job Responsibilities

  • Provides a professional and safe performance environment to the Peabody Institute students, faculty, staff, patrons and guests.
  • Assists the production team in providing all stage, production, sound, lighting and technical needs for the choral, dance, opera, instrumental and orchestral needs of all performance at Peabody  include, lighting, audio visual, administrative, live audio mixing, sound reinforcement, setting up A/V equipment, microphones and all stage management  
  • Works in close partnership with members of the production team, conductors, artistic directors and students to support the event production, audio-visual, sound and curricular needs of the school in order to achieve an excellent production and a quality learning opportunity. 



  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required. Related stage production and audio visual, recording arts experience is required. Experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Special Skills and Requirements:

  • Experience with technical theater productions.
  • Experience with lighting, audio mixing, sound reinforcement, video, stage lighting, stage production and rigging.
  • Hours flexible and include daytime and evenings and weekends as appropriate to the staffing needs of the department.
  • Professional demeanor, superior communication skills, comfort in high-pressure situations, adaptable, solutions-oriented problem solver.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with proven ability to effectively prioritize workload.
  • Ability to work long hours and nontraditional shifts:  evenings and weekends due to performance schedule.


Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to walk, stand, climb for extended periods. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
