Psychiatric Therapist

 

General summary/purpose: Provides assessment, evaluation, and treatment of HIV/AIDS-infected individuals at the Johns Hopkins Moore Clinic and at clinics in surrounding counties.

 

Specific duties & responsibilities:

  •   Conducts initial psychiatric evaluations on new clients - in collaboration with staff psychiatrist evaluates new clients for diagnosis and treatment.
  •   Provides ongoing psychotherapy and evaluation of psychiatric symptoms and behavioral disorders as ongoing treatment, through both individual and group psychotherapy
  •   Facilitates triage and care of acute cases and emergencies, as well as referral of clients to other health care providers or inpatient service as indicated
  •   Documents all encounters with clients and maintains records in accordance with Department standards.
  •   Attends team meetings to communicate with other professionals and with referral sources.
  •   Interfaces with other professionals when clinically appropriate for patient care.
  •   Seeks and provides clinical supervision when appropriate
  •   Attends meetings for collaboration with multidisciplinary team members
  •   Participates in Departmental and University meetings for continuing staff education
  •   Maintains current knowledge of mental health illness issues related to HIV/AIDS and substance abuse

 

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

 

Education:

Master's Degree required in Psychology, Social Work or other related field. Must be licensed/certified in specialty field e.g. Social Work, Professional Counselor, Addictions Counselor as required by the state of Maryland. Certification must be maintained throughout duration of employment. Some training in psychodynamic therapy strongly preferred. Knowledge of cognitive behavioral therapy techniques helpful.

 

Licensure, Certification, Registration:

Must have and maintain licensure by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors, and,

Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and, Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor.

 

Experience:

Two years experience working with substance abuse or related populations required. Must be able to use independent judgment and give exceptional attention to detail. Must be able to make decisions and act independently while keeping the investigator informed.

 

Preferred qualifications:

 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  •   Experience with computers including word processing, databases and excel spreadsheets is required.
  •   Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple projects required; strong organizational and problem solving skills required.
  •   Ability to establish goals, develop methods of implementation, and systems of accountability required. Flexible hours required, including weekends.
  •   Must be comfortable working with the participant population.
  •   Must possess skills in supportive therapy. 
  •   Requires knowledge of established diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, theoretical approaches, and intervention techniques. 
  •   Good communication skills, both oral and written. 
  •   Knowledge and understanding of Federal statutes regulating confidentiality of drug and alcohol records. 
  •   Differential diagnosis of complex mental health problems, judgment regarding when to seek supervision, experience with the phenomenology and treatment of major mental illness and suicide and/or violent or homicidal behaviors. 
  •   Some experience treating both neurotic and personality disordered patients is essential.
  •   Experience in substance abuse issues required.
  •   Knowledge of Microsoft Word and facility in emails is required. 
  •   Knowledge of Excel helpful.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
