Receiving Clerk

We are seeking a Receiving Clerk, to whom will receive and check incoming shipments. Moves shipment to storage area and transports shipment to the appropriate office or laboratory. Ensures appropriate and safe handling of shipment. Maintains records of shipment.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Checks incoming shipment upon receipt against accompanying carrier's waybill or bill of lading to ensure that shipment is correct and complete. Makes a note of visual damages on the way bill as appropriate and obtains the delivery driver's signature for verification purposes.
  • Access on-line order system, as needed, if shipping information is incomplete in order to determine correct delivery location.
  • Assists delivery driver in unloading shipment from truck to loading dock as needed. Observes all packing labels to ensure safe and proper handling of items.
  • Moves shipment to appropriate storage area by floor or building.
  • Marks and labels shipment with purchase order number, date, and the like as required.
  • Transports shipment to the proper office or laboratory. Obtains appropriate signatures.
  • Maintains records of special non-purchase order material received, compressed gas cylinders, dry ice received and shipped, trash containers emptied, and other special records as may be required.
  • Answers routine inquiries and refers difficult or unusual inquiries to proper authority.
  • Observes all safety precautions in the handling of shipment and materials to avoid harming self and others, and damaging property.
  • Maintains equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition. Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write in order to maintain records, read bill of lading, labels, and packing slips, and so forth.
  • Ability to interact and/or work with faculty, students staff and the public in order to answer questions, to handle routine problems, and to provide assistance in a respectful and courteous manner.
  • Ability to lift, carry or otherwise move and position objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, walk or otherwise move about campus on a continuous basis. Ability to ascend/descend stairs on a regular basis.

**This is a Bargaining Unit position. All newly hired employees in Bargaining Unit positions shall be considered “probationary” employees until completion of 90 calendar days of employment. The university will notify the employees’ union. Bargaining Unit employees shall become eligible for benefits upon completion of their probationary period.



Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent preferred.
  • Two years related experience preferred.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
