Reporting and Business Analyst

The Office of the University Registrar (OUR) is seeking a Reporting and Business Analyst who will report to the Senior Programmer Analyst. In alignment with the mission and values of the Johns Hopkins University, the OUR maintains the integrity of student records, ensures institutional policy compliance, provides guidance and support to the divisional records/registrar offices, collaborates with university-wide stakeholders, and enhances the service capability of student systems in support of faculty teaching and student learning.


The Reporting and Business Analyst will be responsible for:

  • Assisting with university-wide reporting.
  • Fulfilling ad-hoc requests for data from both internal and external constituents.
  • Assisting with data validation for any system implementation, maintenance and support (including installation, modification, and testing of new and/or upgraded applications and productivity tools).
  • Assisting with creating and maintaining relevant system and process documentation.
  • Contributing to the success of technical and functional projects related to the advancement of institutional strategic initiatives, compliance and data governance, institutional integrity, and the modernization of student information solutions across all JHU divisions.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Data Reporting

  • Assist the Senior Programmer Analyst with university-wide external reporting for the State of Maryland and the Department of Education by compiling information and coordinating data validation.
  • Assist with reporting for the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA); assist with Common Data Set (CDS) report validation.
  • Assist with custom reports for specific data requests made by internal and external constituents.
  • Assure quality and validity of institutional reports by maintaining records in support of summary data reports and outlines of methodology implemented such that reports are replicable.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Programmer Analyst, develop and improve university-wide reporting protocols; maintain data dictionary; and provide training across all JHU divisions.
  • Coordinate with all university divisions regarding data integrity prior to freezing extracts used for university-wide reporting.
  • Coordinate the submission of multiple student data files from the JHU student information system (SIS) to the National Student Clearinghouse; review and correct errors generated by the Clearinghouse for each submission; initiate changes to the data files as mandated by the Clearinghouse or JHU offices for accurate reporting.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to keep informed of trends, issues and best practices pertaining to institutional reporting.
  • Research and resolve discrepancies in reports; recommend reporting improvements.


Data Integrity

  • Ensure data integrity and monitor data entry, data analysis, and report generation for adherence to established policies, procedures, and deadlines.
  • Retrieve data from system of record or point-in-time saved extracts using SQL queries and analyze the data with Access, Excel, SPSS, Tableau or other statistical software packages as warranted.
  • Assist in the diagnosis and solution of program or data errors and inconsistencies.
  • Under the direction of the University Registrar and the Senior Programmer Analyst, work with internal auditors concerning data submissions to the State of Maryland.
  • Maintain updated program inventory, Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS) codes and IPEDS Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) codes from the Maryland Higher Education Commission Research and resolve discrepancies in reports; recommend reporting improvements.
  • Run scheduled audit reports and provide support for data clean-up of student records.
  • Assist in the development and clarification of specifications for data extracts and reports for internal and external use.


Other Systems & Data

  • Provide technical support for university databases, including SIS, the University Data Warehouse (UDW), scheduling software, course evaluation software, and others.
  • Serve as a resource on records, systems and data and provide records-related functional systems and data support to the OUR and across all divisions as required.
  • Ensure processes and practices actively safeguard student data (in accordance with university policies).
  • Develop documentation for reporting, systems and data resources; and conduct on-going and ad-hoc training for internal and external users.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Projects

  • Assist the OUR team with project elements such as research/benchmarking, requirements gathering, user acceptance testing, and post-implementation evaluation.
  • Assist the OUR team with creating and organizing project documentation, including project charters, files, and other project resources.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Computer Science or related field required.
  • Four years of related work experience with reporting and/or computer systems and applications.
  • Database programming experience with a major RDBMS (preferably SQL server).
  • Experience with reporting software tools such as SQL Reporting Services or Tableau.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, and XML.
  • Experience with student information systems and applications.
  • Experience with OnBase or other document imaging software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite of programs (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Visio, etc.).
  • Experience with project management software (i.e., Asana, Microsoft Project).
  • Experience using Microsoft BI or Cognos BI.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and processes.
  • Experience with conducting user-acceptance testing, including developing test cases and scripts.
