Research Analyst

The Pathology Department is seeking a casual Research Analyst to provide day-to-day leadership and coordination for the projects involved in the Mass Spectrometry Core Facility.

With a high level of independence and minimal supervision, the incumbent will provide supervision and directions to technical staff on various aspects of research activities. Examples of responsibilities include coordinating efforts on planning and implementing technology development for sample preparation, mass spectrometry analysis, data processing of mass spectrometry data, and the applications of the technologies to the clinical proteomics glycoproteomics. The Research Analyst will report to Principal Investigators (PIs) and study investigators to prepare manuscripts and funding applications.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee, coordinate, and be involved with implementation of all phases of proteogenomics for biological and clinical investigations and validation.
  • Provide technical assistance to research studies and training
  • Participate in meetings and make recommendations on operational issues.
  • Facilitate communication internally among members of the team, including maintaining action items, timelines, and work plans.
  • Make recommendations on budget and expenditures.
  • Preparation of technical reports, manuscripts, abstracts, presentations, and funding applications.
  • Maintain study record and data collection procedures.
  • Attend local and national meetings and conferences.
  • Serve as a resource for investigators and collaborators.
  • Write report manuscripts for NCI funded projects, independently.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by PI.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Develop, design and manage substantial research projects, coordinates own objectives and those of laboratory team members.
  • May oversee data collection, analysis, and verification based on specialized skill and knowledge.
  • Use advanced knowledge base to formulate research method, for example, construct new immunoassay and/or apply methods to automated instruments.
  • Co-author/author publications. Contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to write reports, abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Speak at or attend conference representing issues and Hopkins research.
  • Write grant proposals utilizing the application of specialized knowledge with discretion and judgment.
  • Independently develop protocol and criteria.
  • Make decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making decisions.


Specific Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, see and hear. May sit or stand for prolonged periods and occasionally required to walk. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, touch, feel, and type. May reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, or crouch. Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results.
  • Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens microscopically. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to work with small instruments and delicate equipment.
  • Clinical laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.
  • May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another. May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides.
  • In some areas work space is confined; therefore mobility may be difficult.
  • Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Hospital Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.
  • Must be detail oriented, organized, and accurate.
  • Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. Overtime possible when authorized/needed to meet business and patient needs.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a related science.
  • Six years related experience, with proven technical knowledge and laboratory experience.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience providing oversight/technical assistance for research operations, including mass spectrometry, HPLC, assay development, and previous experience coordinating, conducting, and managing studies.
