Research Assistant

The School of Nursing is seeking a Research Assistant for a clinical trial of a lifestyle-based intervention for adults who are pregnant and postpartum implemented in home visiting programs in Maryland. The Research Assistant will report to the Principal Investigator and work closely with the Program Manager and the study team to facilitate study-related goals. This position participates with the Health Coach Manager, Principal Investigators, Intervention Director, and Research Manager in the plans required to accomplish all study protocols and program goals. This position could be shared with another Healthy for Two, NIH-funded project pending hours available.


About the research study

Healthy for Two – Home Visiting is an effectiveness-implementation hybrid trial funded by NIH to assess the effect of remotely delivered health coaching on pregnancy weight gain/retention and to inform future sustainability in prenatal home visiting programs. The trial aims to recruit a diverse population including Black and Latina participants.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete screening, consent, and randomization of participants.
  • Assist with adaptation of the intervention content, components, and recruitment materials, including Facebook groups.
  • Assist with data collection (e.g. - phone assisted surveys).
  • Assist participants with trouble shooting study-related technology (e.g. - scale and app).
  • Assist with translation, Spanish to English and English to Spanish (e.g. intervention materials, surveys).
  • Assist with Facebook content design, posting and monitoring.
  • Consent and randomize participants.
  • Assist with response to participant safety concerns.
  • Assist with implementation science methods, interviews with stakeholders to get feedback about adaptation and implementation.
  • Spanish speaking RAs will also assist with English to Spanish translation (and back translation).
  • Assist with note taking and subsequent qualitative data analysis from interviews and focus groups and meetings with stakeholders.
  • Attend study-related meetings.
  • Assist with mailing study related materials to participants.
  • Perform other duties and research related tasks, as needed.
  • Operate a personal computer, including access to e-mail, electronic calendars and other basic office support software.


Working Conditions

  • Other than some in-person training, this is a hybrid position. Candidate can perform some (not all) duties from a home office or other off-site location that provides a private, uninterrupted environment, and reliable internet access.


Work Schedule/Hours

  • This position is casual. Preferred availability for flexible hours including some evenings or weekend work.


Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent computer and organizational skills.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, both in person and over the phone.
  • Knowledge of software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Zoom needed.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of relevant experience.
  • Strong preference for bilingual in Spanish and English.
  • Knowledge of smart phone apps and social media.
  • Interest in working with pregnant women, especially women from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Cultural competency regarding the needs of minority populations.
  • Excellent references required.
