Research Assistant

Manage enrollment, data collection, entry and basic analysis for a randomized controlled trial taking place at JHH on the use of a new kind of bassinet that facilitates contact between mothers and infants.


Study description: Most bassinets in US hospitals are still designed for use by ambulatory nursery staff, rather than for use by mobility-impaired new mothers. Current bassinet designs restrict maternal access to their infants and have the potential to expose infants to physical injury. This study aims to evaluate the Couplet Care BassinetTM, a novel infant clinical bassinet designed to support safe implementation of skin-to-skin contact and rooming-in on postnatal units.


We are seeking a Research Assistant who will include obtaining informed consent, managing enrollment and data collection at JHH as well as managing and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data as well as research-related work.


The Research Assistant will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), Study Coordinator, Clinical Research Nurse and other members of the research team members in all aspects of study management. The RA will communicate and work with study team and PI on all project aspects to ensure rapid data entry and high level of quality control.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with the Clinical Research Nurse and other research team members to approach potential study participants, obtain informed consent and enroll them in the study according to the protocol.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and regulations throughout the research process. Protect participant confidentiality and privacy, obtain informed consent, and adhere to ethical principles and practices.
  • Implement the study by collecting data according to the protocol. Safeguard confidentiality of data by following the protocol.
  • Collaborate effectively with the project team, including researchers, supervisors, and other research assistants. Maintain open and clear communication channels to ensure smooth project coordination and progress.
  • Perform administrative tasks related to the project, such as scheduling meetings, organizing files, and managing project-related documentation.
  • Maintain organized and detailed documentation of research procedures, protocols, and findings. This includes recording data collection processes, managing data files, and documenting analysis techniques used.
  • Serve as backup for research protocols (other than primary assignment) as needed.
  • Maintain quality of source documentation and research integrity
  • Attend study meetings to represent the research unit and ensure data quality and the adherence to federal regulations governing clinical research.
  • Participate in other research initiatives as workload allows.
  • Other duties as assigned by the PI or project manager of the project.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree desired.
  • One year of research experience.
  • Research experience in a hospital setting, preferably labor & delivery or pediatrics.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations across ages, sexual orientations, socio-economic circumstances.

Starting Salary Range: $17.00 - $30.00 HRLY ($45,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
