Research Assistant

The Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) is a center within the Department of Population, Family and Reproduction Health at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Under the supervision of the Center Director and Research Program Manager, the Research Assistant will collaborate on innovative Center and grant-funded projects to advance evidence-based policy and practice and effectively engage families and communities in efforts to promote healthy child development and improve health outcomes for all children, youth and families in the United States and beyond.


The Research Assistant will play a central role in the day-to-day operations of the CAHMI and its primary projects, including the CAHMI’s data-driven and web-based (1) National Maternal and Child Health Data Resource Center (DRC) (www.childhealthdata.org), (2) “Cycle of Engagement” (COE) model and tools and (3) Maternal and Child Health Online Measurement Compendium and other related research projects.


The successful candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently, generate ideas and processes to complete work and manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment with changing priorities required. They must have excellent time management, work planning, written and verbal communications skills and strong conceptualizing, teamwork, problem solving, decision making and detail orientation skills. Also required is the capacity to efficiently identify and summarize research literature, policy reports and related resources. Success requires a commitment to improving the maternal and child health systems and services in the US to improve health outcomes and well-being of mothers, children, youth, families and communities.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Overall assistance on priority research projects: Assist in the updating and maintenance of the CAHMI Cycle of Engagement Model and Tools, National Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health and Maternal and Child Health Online Measurement Compendium and other projects. This includes continuous support to review, edit, translate (Spanish) and ensure effective written materials, support development and quality checks on data produced using the National Survey of Children’s Health, updating website content and synthesizing information and literature as needed to support communication and research reports and papers related to key projects.
  • Center Websites and Communications: Confirm operations of all center websites and address with center leadership any issues with functioning. Learn to update content and resources on center websites and support website maintenance and continuous improvements using Sitefinity content management system.
  • Other Research Support: Efficiently identify, review and summarize research literature, policy reports and related resources; support developing reference lists and formatting and submitting research papers, conference abstracts; data double check for the online data query resources; enter updated information to the center’s maternal and child health measurement compendium and assist in developing short descriptions of measures and synthesis summaries related to available measures and priority gaps.
  • Maintain Clear Work Plan: Maintain deliverable-based workplan that is continuously updated; proactively seek out needed information and maintain strong communication and problem-solving approach to work; prepare for and actively participate in both internal and external partner meetings and ensure follow-up steps are identified and achieved.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in public health, public policy, or related field.
  • One to two years cumulative related experience.
  • Excellent attendance history.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent time management skills and experience managing multiple projects/tasks with conflicting deadlines.
  • Must have well developed organizational skills, advanced communication skills, and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Must have demonstrable experience in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Must be comfortable working with deadlines and under pressure.
  • Must be comfortable working with a variety of communication styles and manage executive calendars that are busy and change often.
  • Knowledge of programs, policies, and data sources related to MCH, and specifically related to early childhood development, children with special health care needs and family health and well-being.
  • Fluent in Spanish (spoken and written).


Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Highly efficient computer skills required (Constant Contract, WordPress, Doodle Polling, Zoom, Adobe Pro, Sitefinity Website Content Management System, Social Media platforms).
  • Experience with SPSS, SAS or STATA and basic analysis of survey-based data and variable construction preferred.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
