Research Assistant

The Department of Mental Health, Research is seeking a Research Assistant to assist with a project funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD). This project will develop and evaluate a trauma-informed, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake intervention for healthcare providers and Black women residing in Mississippi


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruiting, screening and enrolling study participants
  • Conducting semi-structured qualitative interviews and analyzing qualitative data.
  • Research assistant will also have the opportunity to lead and/or assist with the develpment of manuscripts, and reports.


Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in related discipline.  Some related experience.

 Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Work or research experience with underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities.
  • Work or experience with women who faced domestic violence.
  • Experience with survey development software.
  • Experience obtaining informed consent from human subjects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and/or Access
  • Previous experience in health-related settings
  • Willingness to travel to community healthcare clinics in MS (when COVID restrictions are lifted).

Physical Requirements: 

Sitting, standing and walking for extended period. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).  Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.

Starting Salary Range: $16.26 - $22.35; Commensurate with experience

Schedule: 15 hrs a week ; working remotely until further notice

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
