Research Assistant

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a Research Assistant to coordinate and implement research activities of the lab. Under the supervision of a faculty investigator, Alban Latremoliere, PhD, the Research Assistant will perform data analysis and data management, participate in general lab administration, participate in grant writing and assist the PI on developing protocols.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities


Data Analysis/ Data Management

  • Setup and maintain mouse colonies (including monitoring animals and maintaining health record).
  • Conduct data analysis of behavioral experiments and sensory assessments.
  • Maintain HIPAA-compliant participant database. Maintain data archives.
  • Organize files.
  • Assist in experimental design and implementation.


General Lab Administration

  • Participate with PI on design and implementation of standard operating procedures.
  • Attend and take notes at lab meetings.
  • Supervise undergraduate research assistants.
  • Liaise between administrative office as necessary.
  • Order supplies and maintain equipment as necessary, review invoices and statements and shipments for correctness.


Protocol Management

  • Assist PI on developing ACUC protocols and amendments.
  • Liaise between lab and ACUC and RAR.
  • Prepare all necessary forms and paperwork related to research protocols.
  • Under direction from PI, prepare and submit any safety or biohazard forms.


Grant Writing

  • Participate with PI on grant applications, non-competing renewals, and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with administrative staff regarding grant submissions, as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
