Research Assistant




The Department of Surgery is currently searching for a full time Research Assistant to support breast cancer research in the Division of Surgical Oncology. The Research Assistant will be responsible for database management, data cleaning, data harmonization and statistical analysis with the breast cancer database, and other studies.  In addition to data management, this role will also provide support in assisting the physician-investigators with multiple clinical research projects.



Specific Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Oversee the day to day data collection for research studies and run both standard and ad hoc reports. 
  • Data collection responsibilities include: abstracting data from paper and electronic medical records, conducting baseline and follow-up interviews over the phone or in person.
  • Organize and file participant records.
  • Assist in study chart reviews, preparation and maintenance of study materials.
  • Perform other recruitment, retention and research related activities as needed.
  • Data management responsibilities include: inputting, organizing, editing, and verifying accuracy of data prior to entry into a database.
  • Develop processes for ensuring data collection can occur in effective and efficient manner.
  • Understand the importance/impact of data integrity regarding honest reporting of sensitive and confidential patient information.
  • Organize, edit and verify data, and score data collection forms as needed.
  • Adhere to guidelines regarding the sensitivity and confidential nature of patient information.
  • Exercise good judgment, tact, and sensitivity at all times.
  • Participate in staff meetings to report on screening, recruitment and data collection progress and resolve problems. 
  • Work independently and under the direction of the Principal Investigators to ensure successful completion of clinical research projects.
  • Learn and follow all study procedures and protocols.
  • May be required to travel to satellite locations.


Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline. 
  • Some related experience.  
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula:  18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:


  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks, detail oriented, self-motivated, strong interpersonal skills, ability to use personal computer; database and spreadsheet knowledge.
  • Highly attentive to detail and deadlines.
  • Ability to work with physicians and scientists on data driven research studies.
  • Familiarity with data security methods and compliance with regulations and institutional policy.
  • Familiarity with human subject research and ethics/regulatory implications of working with this type of data.

Starting Salary Range: $16.26 - $22.35

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
