Research Data Analyst

General Summary/Purpose:

The Analyst works closely with PI/Researcher. This position primarily involves performing medical chart review and analyses; as well as using national surveys and administrative databases. This individual will help manage and analyze laboratory, clinical, and chart data provided by collaborators. In addition, this individual will document and communicate findings, and be involved in publication efforts. In addition, this analyst role will have specific specialization in the whole slide imaging both in terms generating these images from physical glass slides as well as the post processing analytics needed to leverage these imaging files with clinical and research platforms for digital pathology. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and committed to a common mission, a team effort, and collaborations across academia.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  •   Develops data collection and analysis methodology; including defining data sources and proper collection procedures.  Develops and implements data collection quality assurance procedures to insure validity and reliability of study results.
  •   Carries out appropriate methodologic procedures for the curating, collection, and organization of data from medical charts, participant interviews, survey’s and/or related databases.
  •   Generate whole slide imaging data from physical glass slide using existing scanners within the department. 
  •   Manages post processing analytics of these resulting data including quality control, file formatting, and ingestion into existing research and clinical digital pathology platforms.
  •   Performs data analysis and interpretation, utilize knowledge of statistics and quantitative analysis.
  •   Prepares written reports, generates reports, charts, tables, and presents data
  •   Contributes data and summaries for manuscripts/publications.
  •   Participates in regularly schedule meetings with study investigators and team.
  •   Maintains appropriate systems for database associated management.
  •   Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  •   Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline.
  •   3 years related experience. 
  • Additional education (Master’s level) may substitute for some of the required experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree required in biostatistics, epidemiology, or other data-science-related disciplines with significant coursework in epidemiology, statistics, and computer science or programming. Advanced proficiency in conducting research and reviewing medical charts.



Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  •   Experience working pathology reports and digital pathology/whole slide imaging.
  •   Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  •   Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  •   Experience working with complex survey data and/or longitudinal cohort studies.
  •   Excellent interpersonal skills in consulting with researchers and understanding their problems. 
  •   Excellent organizational skills and attention to details.                                                                                                                           
  •   Excellent time and project management skills to handle multiple priorities and concurrent projects.
  •   Ability to work independently and in concert with others. 
  •   Demonstrated experience in being proactive and taking initiative. 


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
