Research Nurse

The Institute for Clinical and Translational Research is seeking a Research Nurse  who reports directly to the ICTR Pediatric Clinical Research Unit (PCRU) and will be indirectly reporting to the Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI). This role provides skilled nursing support in both the Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) at KKI and the PCRU, both located on the Johns Hopkins east Baltimore campus. This position will support the PCRU at 50% and the CTU at 50% effort. The Research Nurse carries out outpatient clinical procedures in keeping with approved study protocols, clinic policies, and good clinical practice (GCP). This position may also assist with training of clinical skills and protocol review. This position will provide nursing to a wide range of ages including infants/toddlers, adults and individuals with developmental disabilities.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implement standards of Good Clinical Practices in the care of research subjects.
  • Provide study‐protocol‐directed, evidence‐based care based on the nursing process, policies, procedures, and protocols of the Johns Hopkins University and Hospital, and the Kennedy Krieger Institute.
  • Insert IV’s, monitor infusions, give medications, conduct research participant interviews, draw blood samples, process lab samples, conduct QA/inspection of Clinic equipment, obtain vital signs, perform ECGs, and monitor research participants
  • Fill out appropriate study paperwork and complete nursing documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty investigators, research nurses, study coordinators and other members of the study team to ensure the highest quality, most ethical clinical research study.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty investigators, research nurses, study coordinators and other members of the study team on research activities including, but not limited to: study coordination, data management, and development and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Identify and advocate for quality improvement initiatives (clinical, financial, and operational) that are aligned with departmental and organizational safety and operational objectives and promote cost‐effective use of clinic resources.
  • Attend protocol start up meetings, and be familiar with all study protocols being conducted in the clinic, including study budget and utilization review.
  • Attend unit meetings at KKI and PCRU.
  • Enforce all unit, lab, safety and bedside testing policies for the unit consistent with JHH/JHU/KKI policies and procedures and adhere to all HIPAA requirements.
  • Work under the direction of the PCRUs Sr. Research Nurse and the KKI CTU’s Manager of Medical Programs to ensure successful completion of each clinical research study and to perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):   

  • Must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • Advanced education may NOT substitute for experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing required.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong organizational and problem‐solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with various research teams.
  • Effective interpersonal skills: must be an outgoing self-starter who can comfortably work with physicians and staff and get things done.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

 

Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:

  • Certification as a Clinical Research Professional preferred.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to remain standing and/or move about on feet for most of the work day.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.
  • Ability to move about.

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Must adhere to policies related to protecting and reporting of sensitive and confidential patient information. Must understand the importance and impact of data integrity in terms of patients, study results, costs, quality of service, and scientific research in general.
  • Requires regular contact with research participants, physicians, and other health care personnel. Requires the use of good judgment, tact, and sensitivity.
  • Position will RARELY require off‐hour work in the evenings, nights, or weekends.  These will be compensated with an hourly differential.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
