Research Nurse

The Center for Immunization Research offers an exciting career opportunity for a Research Nurse to participate in the conduct of vaccine trials. The Research Nurse will provide nursing and research support for research studies and be responsible for planning and delivering the administrative and clinical component of vaccine and challenge studies in accordance with research protocols and projected timelines.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  •  Coordinate study activity in support of Adult Vaccine and Challenge Studies.
  •  Will be afforded an opportunity to experience all facets of conduct of early phase vaccine trials, including work within FDA regulations and ICH Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
  • Assist study teams with the implementation of research project(s) in the following areas
  • Research subject interactions per protocol including but not limited to recruitment, screening, obtaining medical history, subject education, conducting informed consent, clinical assessments, data collection and recording.
  • Administering ordered medication as per protocol.
  • Specimen collection (nasal, saliva, urine, blood) and other samples as per study requirement.
  • Attend training sessions for IRB updates, Human subject’s protection, HIPAA, DOT/IATA, CPR, Bloodborne Pathogens and renewals as required by sponsor or university.
  • Communicate status of research activities to study team.
  • Assist in the development of SOPs and update as needed.
  • Obtain, process, transport, and receive lab specimens when needed, including maintenance of specimen tracking log.
  • Assist and support other staff when necessary.
  • Contribute to QA/QC process.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Phlebotomy skills.
  • CPR certification.
  • Able to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
  • Intermediate to advanced use of Microsoft office suite.
  • Familiarity with databases, accurate data entry, and report generation is desired.
  • Must have concise, clear and professional communication, verbal and written, as well as interpersonal skills.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Individual must be a Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing or related discipline. 
  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Clinical research or relevant clinical nursing experience.

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
