Research Nurse

The Department of Neurology ia seeking a motivated Research Nurse to be part of an exciting new clinical-research program with the aim of improving care in children with stroke and other neurologic conditions. The individual will work with a multidisciplinary team including members from the Department and will be engaged in program building, research, and clinical efforts.


The ideal individual will be organized, motivated, and a creative problem solver who is excited to be an integral part of a team passionate about improving care for children with stroke and other neurologic conditions. Research and program building efforts will have a specific focus on improving care of children and young adults with stroke and/or sickle cell disease.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Building a multidisciplinary, multicenter research and clinical program to improve care of children with or at risk for stroke.
  • Collaborates with research and clinical staff in various departments within and outside of the institution. 
  • Actively participates in multidisciplinary and multicenter meetings.
  • May rarely travel to other institutions within Maryland and Washington D.C. for site visits and collaborative research. In conjunction with PI, develops study timelines/goals, monitors study progress, and collaborates in the development of recruitment strategies to ensure accrual within goal time frames.
  • Ensures ethical and compliant research operations: Collaborates in the development and writing of protocols, consent forms, and regulatory documents as appropriate.
  • Applies knowledge of federal and local regulations when evaluating new protocols and will review & assess new protocols for clarity, thoroughness, logistical feasibility, and maintenance of subject safety. Oversees and collaborates in the development of study tools including data collection forms, eligibility checklists, preprinted orders, etc.
  • Ensures IRB approval has been received prior to initiation of research activity and that all IRB requirements are being fulfilled.
  • Communicates with the IRB with regards to any protocol deviations and for continuing review activities.
  • Recognizes and documents protocol deviations.
  • Assists in completion of annual periodic review of data for reporting to IRB and study sponsors.
  • Ensures research participant comfort and safety. Assesses and ensures subject safety throughout participation in research studies.
  • Recognizes common laboratory values and vital signs, understands when abnormal values are concerning, and alerts appropriate individuals for clinically significant deviations. Acts on the PI/clinician’s recommendation for intervention.
  • Maintains follow-up to determine resolution of adverse event.
  • Communicates with research participants and families. Contacts patients and potential research subjects, or their legal guardians, to discuss participation in research studies, to answer clinical and research questions (in close collaboration with the physician team). 
  • Screens potential research subjects for eligibility for participation in research studies (including review of medical history, medications, imaging, other relevant documents).
  • Demonstrates understanding of the informed consent process and when appropriate will obtain informed consent and/or assent from research subjects and/or their parents. As appropriate, documents informed consent in medical record.
  • Documents written & verbal communication with study contacts. Communicates effectively with research participants and families of active and prospective study participants. Communicates effectively with members of the health care and research teams.
  • Arranges study visits for research protocols and clinical testing visits per program building goals.
  • Maintains working knowledge of institutional information systems for correctly scheduling clinical tests & procedures and extracting data.
  • Maintains and updates electronic databases. Abstracts data from a variety of sources and enters data into an electronic database. Tracks research subject participation in an institutional database. Communicates with Information Technology services as needed.
  • Collaborates with physician with clinical care of children while gaining an understanding of pediatric neurological conditions.
  • Attends outpatient clinics when appropriate, to facilitate clinical care and research studies.
  • In conjunction with the clinical/research team, provides education to clinical patients and research studies about stroke, seizures, research procedures, and other facets of pediatric neurological care. Interacts with families and children in outpatient and inpatient settings to consent for research studies and perform basic study procedures including administering surveys, gathering clinical data.
  • Contacts families and patients with laboratory and imaging results after discussion with clinical team.
  • Coordinates care that involves other health care disciplines or resources to provide continuity and optimal care. Documents interactions with patients and participants in the electronic medical record.
  • Assists in arranging, organizing, and scheduling activities pertaining to clinical care, programmatic needs, and research studies. 
  • Completes paperwork related to research studies, clinical care, program needs, and publication/dissemination of research findings.
  • Collaborates in preparing study results for publication/presentation.
  • As appropriate, takes advantage of opportunities to make presentations in local community and publish in the nursing literature regarding research projects and areas of expertise.
  • Collaborates on promotion of clinical programs to provide resources to the maximum number of children affected by specific neurologic conditions.
  • With PI, works on promotion of programs using media, medical journals, social media platforms, and community-based resources, in compliance with HIPAA and other institutional rules and guidelines.
  • Over time and with supervision, develops sufficiency and independence with tasks related to for clinical-, programmatic-, and research-related functions.
  • With guidance, organizes own time and sets priorities.
  • Able to prioritize workload and manage multiple projects effectively. Achieves and maintains a working knowledge of computer software specific to department, including word processing, e-mail, MyChart, excel, & internet functions.
  • Aware of & knowledgeable about departmental Standard Operating Procedures.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related discipline required.
  • Three years’ experience strongly preferred. Related Master's Degree may be considered in lieu of experience.
  • Current Maryland State Registered Nurse/RN licensure required. Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the JHH credentialing process is required prior to start date.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served.
  • The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to their  age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit/area/department policies and procedures.

Starting Salary Range: $61,550 - $84,700 annually (commensurate with experience)
