Research Nurse

We are seeking a Research Nurse who will recruit and study participants for a new NINDS-funded grant. They will obtain written consent at the time of the encounter. They will place an IV for the administration of gadolinium and obtain blood for research and clinical purposes. They will learn to administer a battery of neuropsychic and cognitive research tests. They will supervise the visits of research participants and will be familiar with MRI safety. They will learn to independently perform and analyze minimally invasive studies of healthy participants to determine vascular properties in older patients at risk for vascular cognitive dementia. Testing includes ultrasound imaging and monitoring of finger temperatures. They will work directly with Dr. Vaidya and Dr. Nyquist to perform this testing under the direct supervision of Dr. Nyquist. They will also be responsible for the administration and recruitment of subjects. They will be the RN for a new NINDS grant entitled: “Vascular Contributors to Blood Brain Barrier Permeability and Regional White Matter Hyperintensity Progression in Young Asymptomatic People”


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • To recruit and enroll patients for the study entitled “Vascular Contributors to Blood Brain Barrier Permeability and Regional White Matter Hyperintensity Progression in Young Asymptomatic People”.
  • To assist completion of non-invasive minimal risk ultrasound studies under the guidance of Dr. Vaidya on healthy participants for research.
  • To complete non-clinical research-based cognitive and neuro psyche testing under the direction of Dr. Nyquist and supervise the research assistant.
  • To lead the administration and completion of data collection and entry, transfer of samples to the research biorepository, and administrative tasks relevant to the eIRB and study conduct.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Individual must be a Registered Nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.
  • Bachelor's Degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • Comfortable with people and examining participants with ultrasound and being able to place IVs and draw blood.

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
