Research Program Assistant II (Bilingual)



As the U.S. population ages, the number of Americans who have chronic health conditions will greatly increase. These demographic and epidemiologic dynamics will strain the capacity and the sustainability of the acute care-oriented U.S. health care system, which now provides chronic care ineffectively and inefficiently. New health service delivery systems will need to be developed, evaluated, and disseminated into widespread practice in order to deliver high-quality, cost-effective care for older Americans.  Health services researchers at the Center for Transformative Geriatrics Research in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology are dedicated to research that will improve the health and well-being of older adults and the development of the next generation of health care delivery systems.  


The major goals for the health services research program are to lead (1) the development, evaluation and dissemination of geriatrics health service delivery models across the continuum of care; (2) research into issues related to multimorbidity, including treatment burden, health service utilization patterns and models of care for the multimorbid; (3) patient-oriented health services research on issues related to dementia; and (4) research on issues related to health information technology to improve health outcomes for older adults.  


This position will primarily be working on research projects in the areas of geriatrics health services research and patient safety. The research assistant will be responsible for conducting research activities for the Research Team. 


Essential Job Functions:
We are currently seeking a motivated, energetic, and responsible individual to assist with several new research projects that relate to working with older adults and their family members in the community. Responsibilities in this position are broad and include the following: directly assisting in research study day-to-day activities (e.g., recruitment, enrollment, assessment, and follow-up of research participants); administrative duties (e.g., tracking and reporting on research project activities, procurement of supplies, IRB compliance); and academic activities (e.g., performing literature reviews, basic data analysis).  Working in close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team, this is an excellent opportunity to learn about transitions of care, research study methods, and have a rewarding experience knowing you are contributing to the knowledge of how we may improve care transitions for older adults and their families.


Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and Research Program Coordinator, the Research Assistant will conduct the following tasks (other tasks may be added):

  • Primarily responsible for the enrollment of patient, who may be Spanish-speaking, (off-site, in the patient’s residence) for our research studies. 
  • Assists with conducting literature review, development of research protocols, and summarizing findings. 
  • Oversees record management to research study and assists with managing and performing data collection activities, which may include conducting interviews, performing direct observations, and facilitating focus groups.
  • Record and analyze qualitative and quantitative data (i.e. using Excel or Access, STATA, ATLAS.ti., etc.). 
  • Gathers data and assists with preparing presentations for study sites and scientific meetings.
  • Performs basic exploratory data analysis to describe qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Assists the Research Program Coordinator with administrative pieces of research related issues such as assisting in the preparation of data for research manuscripts, preparing and submitting Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications, scheduling meetings/interviews/focus groups with study participants.

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations.


  • Will work directly under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and the Research Study Coordinator.



  • Working knowledge of computers.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required.
  • Knowledge of clinical research practices and principles.


Education & Experience: 

  • Current upper level (Junior or Senior) college student allowed; graduate student preferred with training in a related discipline (e.g., public health, medicine, nursing). 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Interacts professionally with patients, staff, and co-workers.
  • High level of interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Basic knowledge of healthcare systems and strong interest in conducting research in the healthcare field.
  • Knowledge and experience in reviewing literature using common databases, and use of reference software such as “Refworks” and Endnote.
  • Functional knowledge in data collection methodology.
  • Some experience in qualitative analysis and questionnaire design to complete statistical data analysis. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in research projects.
  • Ability to balance and prioritize tasks, and delivers timely outcomes.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills.


Physical Requirements: 

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time. 
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. 
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. 
  • Communication skills using the spoken word. 
  • Ability to see within normal parameters. 
  • Ability to hear within normal range. 
  • Ability to move about.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
