Research Program Assistant II

General summary/purpose:

Under the direction of a PhD Investigator, and Post-Doctoral Researcher, conduct experimental research sessions for residential/non-residential pharmacological research protocols and perform certain data handling functions required by a research protocol.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for preparation of session room and equipment, compiling necessary forms, and providing professional explanations of such matters as orientation procedures, payment procedures, practice sessions, running of sessions, patient evaluations, and transportation of subjects (if needed).
  • Conducts interviews with potential volunteers to ascertain drug histories, medical information, and witnessing of consent procedures. Schedules subjects by producing a calendar for the subject’s interview, training and session days which will confirm the availability of the necessary test area facilities, and coordination of any additional protocol personnel.
  • Involves running research protocol sessions with human volunteers, collecting physiological and behavioral data on Macintosh computers. Data collection tasks may include collection of urine and saliva samples, administration of self-reports, independent observation of subject’s condition, monitoring of physiological measures, collection and measurement of pupil photographs, maintenance of all session equipment, and interaction with medical personnel as needed.
  • Input, organize, edit and verify data on Macintosh computer. Score subjective report forms filled out by research volunteers.
  • Responsible for maintaining a current and backup copies of research data and ensuring the security and confidentiality of the data.
  • Provide graphic representations of research data according to the needs of the investigator.
  • Serve as back-up for research protocols (other than primary assignment) as needed.

Minimum qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED and two (2) years of related experience in an experimental research setting required. Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Public Health or related field

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

Experience with computers required. Experience with Macintosh or Windows preferred. Experience with spreadsheet and graphing software preferred.

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Should have good interpersonal and communication skills in order to carry out protocols with human volunteers of diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds. Excellent organizational skills required. Experience with organization and verification of data sets preferred. Must be able to make decisions and act independently while keeping investigator informed.

Starting Salary Range:   $13.73-$18.87; commensurate with experience

Employee Group: Full-Time

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 40 hrs/wk

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
