Research Program Assistant II


General Summary/Purpose:

The Research Program Assistant II has duties and responsibilities related to Laboratory Work in a research environment. The Assistant must display professionalism, communicate effectively to others and function as a research team member. For experimental tasks, the Assistant will function under the direction and guidance of the Principal Investigator when performing research. The Assistant will report to the PI. The Assistant must be competent and provide a safe, clean, orderly and comfortable environment for the Radiology research team.


Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Will take care of the day to day maintenance of the lab and checks on chemical inventory
  • Will do chemical synthesis of peptides conjugated to aspirins.
  • Will assist with animal husbandry.
  • Participates in lab meetings
  • Ability to anticipate daily changes in schedule, maintaining a smooth research flow.
  • Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from bio hazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
  • Obtains and records animal vital signs: pregnancies (breeding colony), weight, tumor size
  • Maintains and uses principles of aseptic technique and infection control when performing tissue and cell culture
  • Operates research equipment as directed by the PI.
  • Recognizes emergency situations, implements emergency procedures according to research guidelines
  • Documents task performed accurately in lab notebooks.
  • May perform related and delegated tasks, which includes taking and relaying messages, and running errands.
  • Participates in skill development and training through in-service programs to enhance knowledge level and to ensure mastery of research procedures.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Two (2) years of related experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing required. Knowledge of medical terminology required. Outstanding organizational skills required. Excellent attention to detail skills required. Must have excellent time management skill. Ability to understand and implement support for research. Ability to manage multiple projects at once, and effectively prioritize each. Requires outstanding verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
