Research Program Coordinator

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">*This position is an essential position which requires the incumbent to work from home during an event (weather or otherwise) that causes JHU to curtail its operations by closing some or all the university’s offices.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">General Summary/Purpose:

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The Research Program Coordinator (RPC), under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor or Principal Investigator, will be responsible for coordinating of all aspects of the Medical Critical Care Research Group at Johns Hopkins University. The RPC will be a leader and point of contact for four trials of interventions to treat COVID – 19 pneumonia and other studies of sepsis, acute lung injury, and triage. 


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">General qualifications include strong organizational skills, the ability to easily adapt to change and work independently, to work constructively in a team environment, and a willingness to learn new skills and knowledge.  The RPC will be a member of our multiple multidisciplinary research team, which will include faculty investigators, research nurses, other study coordinators, and students.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Provide high quality management and coordination of research studies.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Partake in and oversee the enrollment and registration of critically ill patients into research studies.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Assist in the development and clarity of study protocols to establish functional standard operating procedures, maintain manuals of operation, data collection instruments, training materials and other materials.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Assist research team in developing and maintaining database of research studies using REDCap, Excel, and/or other cloud based platforms.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Prepare data reports for ethical review committees, funding agencies, and other sponsors.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Assist in compiling data for study progress reports and grant proposals using Stata, RedCap, and/or similar.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Communicate effectively with administrative staff, institutional leadership, and study sponsors at JHU.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies used in research studies.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The position will be based in Baltimore, but will require travel between Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center as we will recruit participants from each site.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Organize and lead regular calls regarding progress in data collection activities, data management, patient safety, and other site-specific issues with members of the research team.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Maintain compliance with HIPAA and IRB regulations and guidelines and ensure staff compliance.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Perform SAP transactions including order of supplies (Shopping Cart), Travel Assistant, and On-Line Payment as requested.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Performs other duties and special projects as requested.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Minimum Qualifications:

  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Some related experience<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"> required.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">JHU Equivalency Formula:<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"> 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Preferred Qualifications:

  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">One – Two (1-2) years of work experience preferred.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Experience in project coordination.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The candidate must have the ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Attention to detail and ability to adhere to deadlines is a must.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">The candidate must also have proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and personal computer skills.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision, but asks for clarification when needed regarding data quality and integrity issues.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Able to effectively prioritize and work on multiple tasks with concurrent deadlines and demonstrate excellent time management skills and efficiency.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Attention to detail and ability to adhere to deadlines.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Maintain high level of motivation for job functions with a positive attitude.
  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Maintain and manage relationships with multiple and diverse stakeholders in this the research setting.


<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Required:

  • <span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">All IRB-required courses, appropriate study related certifications/training and SAP training must be completed within 2 weeks of start date.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
