Research Program Coordinator


General Summary:
The Research Program Coordinator will assist the research team with the conduct of long-term NIH-funded or other investigator-initiated research protocols examining the HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) care continuums. The research coordinator will also assist in infectious disease community outreach and education programs focused on increasing HIV/HCV linkage to care and treatment.  


The research and outreach will take place on the East Baltimore Campus.


Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinates the implementation of study protocols in collaboration with the Research Program Manager, the Principal Investigator, and co-investigators. Recruits volunteers and obtains informed consent. Provides onsite data collection by administration of verbal and computer assisted questionnaires. Downloads and records resultant data. Follows federal, state, and institutional laws and guidelines to access and maintain confidential paper and electronic records related to the research trial. Monitors subject accrual, follow up, data collection and performs quality assurance checks on data. Schedules subjects for laboratory tests, medical examinations and consultations. Maintains accurate information on each subject to facilitate study encounters.


Telephones and interviews subjects to obtain accurate pre-registration information and to confirm appointments. Coordinates and performs laboratory specimen processing, storage, and shipment using approved bio-safety techniques. Communicates with clinical and study staff to promote and ensure successful recruitment for studies and medical management while in the study. Communicates with Principal Investigator, Co-Investigators and collaborators regarding the progress of the research and management of problems. Disseminates information to research subjects and health care providers. Administrative duties including but not limited to: scheduling of research-related appointments, medical examinations, and laboratory appointments; relaying information to research volunteers regarding preparation for tests and examinations; maintaining research calendar, scheduling research appointments and meeting rooms; opening, sorting and screening research-related mail; using automated systems to access, enter, and edit subject information.


The coordinator will serve as the official coordinator of Generation Tomorrow, a program which trains students and community members in HIV/HCV education, testing, and counseling.  In this role, the coordinator will handle program planning, scheduling, and outreach programs.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. 


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
Medical terminology and basic computer skills are required. Experience using IBM compatible PC and office suite software is required. Bio-specimen processing skills are required. Certification in appropriate skill groups must be obtained during introductory period. 


Knows the formal and informal departmental and divisional goals, standards, policies and procedures which may include some familiarity of other departments within the school/division. Is sensitive to the interrelationship of both people and functions within the department/division. Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Reports to the Senior Research Manager. Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations.


Ability to stand, walk or sit for an extended period of time. Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction. Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard. Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters. Ability to hear within normal range. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.


The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
