Research Project Assistant (Department of Epidemiology)
The ALIVE study is a long-standing (~40 years) cohort of people who inject drugs in Baltimore – the study began in response to the HIV pandemic with a focus on understanding the incidence and natural history of HIV among people who inject drugs. The study has enrolled nearly 6000 participants over this time period and continues to follow participants semi-annually within a research clinic.
We are seeking a Research Project Assistant who will provide entry-level administrative support for a research project. Will assist with tasks that may include community outreach, data collection, sample collection, laboratory work, and/or field work. Collects and/or organizes data through the implementation of research procedures and understanding of research goals. This position, which reports directly to the Clinic Supervisor, will be responsible for conducting study visits with participants. The primary duties will be to administer study questionnaires and perform other assessments, like blood pressure, height, and weight measurement, functional assessments, as well as HIV rapid testing.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with collection and organization of data per study requirements, e.g. participant interviews, administer questionnaires, conduct background research, etc.
- Assist with setup of tools and procedures for data collection and study processes.
- Enter data into the database.
- Run routine queries of the data.
- Perform basic literature searches.
- Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above:
- Administer questionnaires using an online platform (REDCap) and functional assessments/vital signs to participants in the ALIVE study and other related substudies.
- Cover for the receptionist, support substudies within ALIVE, and administer HIV Rapid testing with pre and post-test counseling.
- Offer/educate participants on available ORP (overdose response program) supplies, including Narcan and drug testing strips.
- Perform blood and urine collection procedures for the ALIVE study and substudies.
- Process and package specimens, transport specimens to the lab, and coordinate and respond to lab inquiries.
- Although there is a full-time phlebotomist on staff, this position may also provide back-up phlebotomy support.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
- Six months of work experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

- Phlebotomy experience.
