Research Psychologist

The Behavioral Pharmacology Research Unit is seeking a Research Psychologist who provides protocolized psychotherapy to research participants both on an individual basis in the context of an approved research protocol. This role will work under supervision of Principal Investigator, staff physician, and research program manager: evaluates research participants to ensure that they meet study inclusion/exclusion criteria. Provides administrative support and clinical supervision of lower level staff.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual counseling and interpersonal support to study participants during study session and pre/post-integration sessions. 
  • Provide psychotherapy to study volunteers, including unstructured psychotherapy and standardized therapies (e.g. a brief motivational interviewing intervention).\
  • Administer structured clinical interviews (e.g., SCID-5) and assessments (e.g., C-SSRS, PHQ-9) to study participants.
  • Assess clinical conditions of study participants during sessions and communicate information to BPRU medical staff as needed to address emergent medical and psychological issues.
  • Monitor, guide, evaluate, and rate various activities of study participants throughout sessions 
  • Conduct pre-assessment evaluations before experimental sessions, integration assessments shortly after experimental sessions, and additional assessments at follow-up.  
  • Facilitate resolution of interpersonal conflicts and psychodynamic issues and use techniques such as guided imagery to facilitate and enhance participants’ counseling sessions. 
  • Interact with faculty and staff on research teams, in clinical programs, and with educational outreach initiatives to strategize about their communication needs.
  • Demonstrate effective crisis resolution. 
  • Develop, implement, and maintain planning for caseload. 
  • Refer participants to outside resources or agencies when appropriate. 
  • Record data and observations at specific time points before, during, and after experimental sessions. 
  • Develop a positive and supportive relationship with study participants.
  • Practice acceptable ethical and behavioral standards of conduct, and promote and ensure good clinical practices, ensuring adherence to clinical research protocols. 
  • Run research protocol sessions with human study participants.
  • Provide operational support, including: scheduling subject visits, confirming availability of necessary facilities, preparation of session room and equipment, compiling necessary forms, providing professional explanations of such matters as orientation procedures, payment procedures, collecting and entering physiological and behavioral data into database, and/or assisting with data management.
  • Serve as back-up for research protocols (other than primary assignment) as needed.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Master’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Mental Health or a related discipline required.
  • 2 years counseling, psychotherapy, or directly related experience.
  • Related experience in a clinical or research setting required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree in a related discipline preferred.

  • Ability to work and provide psychotherapy in a clinical setting with research participants who have a variety of mental health conditions.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact effectively within and outside the department.
  • Ability to interact effectively with individuals at all levels and from diverse cultures.
  • Proficient in computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to learn about the work of the department as well to acquire new technical skills as needed.
  • Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in an environment that requires balancing multiple assignments.


Physical Requirements:

  • Able to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods.                                
  • Able to reach by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required, able to manipulate objects with fingers rather than entire hand(s) or arm(s), e.g., use of computer keyboard.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.

Starting Salary Range: $53,020 - $72,930 annually (commensurate with experience)

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
