Research Specialist II



The Department of Institute of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Specialist II that will performs a wide range of lab tasks, assays and production sequencing duties. Works with Lab Manager to troubleshoot and resolves issues. Provides training and technical guidance for other lab personnel on newly developed laboratory automation, workflows and day to day processing.


Specific duties & responsibilities:

Performs production sequencing duties, specifically prioritized to non-standard, specialized HTS projects, to include: Next Generation Sequencing of DNA samples using Illumina Sequencing platforms as well as Library Preparation and Capture using Agilent, KAPA/BioO and Nimblegen assays. QC of RNA and DNA libraries provided by investigators.


Handle detection of SNPs for Principal Investigators via Illumina GoldenGate, Infinium and Beadxpress processes. Responsible for DNA receipt and return, sample entry in and release from LIMS and preliminary sample checks. Prepare samples for detection of SNPs with Illumina GoldenGate, Infinium and Beadxpress processes.


Prototype new technologies to include testing, validation of protocols, and optimizing for production.


Assists Lab Manager with resolving laboratory-related problems to include troubleshooting equipment, software and reagent failures. Also assists with quality assurance/quality control compliance measures for equipment and sequencing data production.


Trains new technicians in all aspects of required duties.


Function as liaison between CIDR and HTS for sample management and processing, sample quality control, reagent requirements and purchases, file management for Johns Hopkins principal investigators, transfer of experimental data to servers and assuring that data is properly archived and recoverable.


Facilitates requests to programming team in regards to Exemplar, CIDRSeqSuite, and existing reporting for sequencing projects.


Performs other duties and special projects duties as assigned.



Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field and two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.  Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula:  30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
