Research Specialist II

We are seeking a Research Specialist II who should have a strong background in basic laboratory techniques and direct experience performing light microscopy (confocal microscopy or epifluorescence microscopy) and data management. They should be capable of assisting other investigators in the design and implementation of experiments. They will provide training in the operation of state-of-the-art optical instrumentation (for example, two photon imaging, super resolution imaging, light sheet imaging), sample preparation, and image analysis. The candidate will also help oversee maintenance of the microscopes, computers, and related equipment. The candidate may be assigned an independent project, and will have the opportunity to participate in the creation of manuscripts and grant applications.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs microscope alignment and basic maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Schedules use of microscopes through a web-based calendar.
  • Assists in the preparation and mounting/maintenance of Biological samples.
  • Provides training in image acquisition and image analysis.
  • Responsible for monitoring computer use and archiving data.
  • Uses various software applications such spreadsheets, databases, and graphics packages.
  • Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies.
  • Posts relevant information to Core website.


Scope of Responsibility

  • Knows the formal policies, procedures and practices necessary to assist other investigators in performing imaging experiments.


Decision Making

  • Exercises managerial or professional judgment and assumes complete responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results.
  • Engages in regular and continuous decision making that has an impact on people, costs, and quality of service.


Authority

  • Will schedule the usage and maintenance of a multiphoton confocal microscope and image analysis workstation.


Communication

  • Exchanges routing information with users and director in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.
  • Will meet with the facility manager daily to coordinate instrument use and perform training.
  • Will also meet the facility director monthly to discuss issues relevant to the Core.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Confocal Microscopy or design of custom optical devices is a plus.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
