Research Specialist II
The Rangan Lab in the Department of Biology at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Specialist II. Our lab studies RNA editing in cephalopods (squid, cuttlefish, and octopus) to understand how RNA recoding modifies molecular, cellular, and organismal functions. Our lab spans both laboratory and fieldwork, specializing in RNA biology, transcriptomics, and protein biochemistry. We are looking for someone to join our group as a Research Specialist II to help with general and advanced lab operations and experimentation.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform a range of assays and experiments specific to the area of research, requiring a good understanding of the work of the lab. Under the direction of the PI, may make contributions to various aspects of research efforts.
- Follow established protocols and use independent judgment in conducting experiments and evaluating the next course of action.
- Assist and oversee the preparation of laboratory reagents (preparing media, lab stocks)
- Oversee general lab organization and management, including with but not limited to organizing lab stocks and assisting with inventory management.
- Assisting in and help in the managing cephalopod care and mariculture operations
- Leader in ordering of supplies, management of inventory and data entry.
- Responsible for the update of the research group’s website management.
- Train and guide other technicians, research fellows, and students in general laboratory tasks as needed.
- Attending weekly lab meetings and presenting updates on work.
- Manage and maintain standardized laboratory safety procedures.
- For the lab, maintain lab equipment. Coordination of the repair of lab equipment and devices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework or experience in molecular biology methods.
- Experience with microscopy.
- Experience with coding.

Starting Salary Range: $41,300 - $72,300 Annually (Commensurate w/exp.)
