Research Specialist II

General Summary:

The Research Specialist II develops assays and protocols for PI approval and design experimental approaches for research projects. Perform a range of sophisticated assays. Make significant/important contributions to various aspects of research efforts. May include troubleshooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of other lab personnel. Additionally, the Research Specialist II will be a member of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center FEST/TCR Immunogenomics Service Center, which is a busy academic laboratory using immunogenomics to evaluate immune responses in cancer patients. The specialist will perform highly technical experiments, with minimal guidance, using basic and emerging immunological and cell culture techniques. Will work closely with core staff, including the core facility manager and director, and data analysts, as well as users of the core facility. Will assist core facility users with experimental planning and design and will aid in data interpretation. In addition, will assist with general laboratory tasks, including processing of human blood/tissue specimens, cell culture, and general maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.



Specific duties & responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for assigned daily research projects.
  • Utilize specialized knowledge to interpret results, e.g. reading controls, evaluate results.
  • Order equipment and supplies, interface with vendors.
  • Use scientific knowledge and lab experience to make judgments and decisions. Works independently.
  • Teach/train students, and new technicians in the lab. Guide, direct, and facilitate problem solving for entry-level lab members on day-to-day problems with more challenging research assays.
  • Make scientific contributions to protocol development, efficiency, and productivity. Collaborate in the development of new techniques and instruments.
  • Apply published research methods to current experimental work by investigating published protocols and discussing them with PI.
  • May scientifically contribute to writing of manuscripts and grants. Process analyzed data into figures for scientific publications.
  • Maintain in vitro cell cultures as part of the MANAFEST assay protocol.
  • Follow established lab procedures and protocols and utilize aseptic technique to perform experiments.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed data records in laboratory notebooks and electronically on file servers, ensuring their appropriate file backup, description, accuracy, and completion.
  • Must be able to communicate well and work with others, including being available on a rotating schedule to cover lab emergencies.
  • Assist with research projects, published journal database searches, manuscript preparation and troubleshooting, as needed.
  • Participate in general laboratory tasks, including maintenance of lab equipment, monitoring inventory levels, and ordering materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Organize and manage orders of reagents and supplies.
  • Prepare reports of findings by compiling/annotating results, and preparing figures/tables, when required.
  • Perform human and mouse T cell immune assays
  • Participate in mouse breeding, colony maintenance, mouse genotyping, and in vivo experiments studying various CD4 and CD8 T cell molecules of interest.
  • Collect, process, and bank human biospecimens in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Set up and maintain in vitro cell cultures.
  • Analyze data and interpret findings.





Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • Two years of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
