Research Specialist
Under the supervision of a faculty investigator, the Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Specialist who will be responsible for independently performing a range of analyses and tests on human samples, cultured cell lines, and mouse model organisms. Work requires basic and advanced use of scientific methods, procedures, and techniques gained through prior education, training, and experience. The Research Specialist should understand the theory behind experimental design and will use analytical skills to implement assigned projects and identify and troubleshoot experimental roadblocks. The Research Specialist should be driven and committed to performing rigorous basic science experiments with a translational focus.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes appropriate technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include tissue culture, assays, basic and advanced molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biological science techniques.
- Responsible for troubleshooting experiments and will be encouraged to consult various resources for optimization.
- Utilize in vivo (mouse) models in experiments.
- Extract DNA and perform molecular tests such as genotyping and DNA sequencing, in addition to analysis of results.
- Maintain large mouse colony, including breeding, genotyping, and record maintenance.
- Design and perform drug trials for various mouse models.
- Perform various histology techniques, from embedding and sectioning to staining and using microscopy to view/analyze slides.
- Perform standard and specialized assays on human samples and cell lines.
- Prepare manuscripts and figures resulting from work in the lab.
- Assist in general maintenance of the laboratory as needed.
- Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics.
- Requires the ability to safely operate scientific laboratory equipment.
- May require flexible work hours at times.
- The job requires superior organizational skills for time and data management.
- Ability to function well in a team.
Machines/Equipment used
- Common laboratory equipment, specialized mouse imaging machines, and computers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
- One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Mouse handling.

Starting Salary Range: $17.11 - $29.90 HRLY (46,900 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)
