Research Specialist

General Summary/Purpose:

Our laboratory investigates the mechanisms of sound perception and how defects in this process cause hearing loss. We use a wide spectrum of techniques (molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, mouse genetics, histology, imaging, omics studies) to study sensory epithelia of the inner ear and the neurons that transmit sound information from the ear to the brain. We also develop gene transfer methods for the inner ear to treat genetic forms of hearing loss. We are seeking a highly motivated individual who is interested to join our team (https://neuroscience.jhu.edu/research/faculty/129) to work on the analysis of the auditory system in mice.  The Research Specialist will participate in the development of gene transfer methods for the inner ear and the analysis of inner ear tissue. She/he will be working in a team that includes other technicians, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform mouse surgery and analysis of tissues.
  • Perform mouse breeding and genotyping, and assist laboratory members with experiments.
  • Evaluates and interprets results from experiments.
  • Train and guide lab personnel.
  • Develop protocols for PI and design experimental approaches for research projects.
  • Performs other various laboratory tasks as requested. 


Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field. 
  • 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with histological techniques, molecular techniques or imaging.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
