Research Specialist

The Transgenic Core serves the Johns Hopkins Community as well as the world-wide scientific community. We are seeking a Research Specialist  who will be interacting and working with Transgenic/Gene-targeting Core Facility personnel to provide transgenic investigations in a full-scale production setting.


The successful candidate will be expected to be proficient in a large repertoire of research techniques that will allow them to work in both an independent manner as well as part of a collaborative team within the laboratory. 


Work requires the basic use of scientific methods and procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The position requires a basic understanding of the theory behind experiments and the application of analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Under general supervision, incumbent will be interacting and working with Transgenic Core personnel to provide gene engineering services to investigators in a full-scale production setting.
  • Follows established procedures and protocols to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
  • Maintain and track data.
  • Collaborate with core members in development of new techniques and instruments.
  • Contribute toward the efficient utilization of resources, equipment and space. 
  • Manage inventory, monitors supply levels, orders equipment and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the development of core goals and objectives.
  • Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience or related field.
  • 1 year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's Degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with micro-injection of DNA/RNA.
  • Experience with developing and implementing PCR genotyping strategies.
  • Working knowledge of nucleic acid chemistry, recombinant DNA manipulations and gene transfer.

Starting Salary Range: $16.28 - $22.38/hr (commensurate with experience)

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
