Research Technologist

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Research Technologist to work in the Otolaryngology department laboratory. The Research Technologist will be responsible for independently performing routine research testing and contributing to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment. Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Perform laboratory experiments by following protocols or with instruction. The techniques include viral injections and calcium imaging from cortical areas in behaving mice models of neurological disorders, such as autism and Alzheimer’s.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The Research Technologist is expected to perform surgery (survival), calcium imaging from neurons/astrocytes and behavioral tests in mice.
  • Will utilize in vivo models in experiments following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains lab records in accordance with USDA and AAALAC guidelines.
  • Complies with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace.
  • Completes annual University biohazard/universal precaution safety training as appropriate.
  • Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
  • Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers.
  • Prepares solutions following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Should also be able to use standard software (e.g., Microsoft office) and learn lab generated codes for data acquisition and analysis.


Physical Requirements

  • Surgeries and some of the experiments are delicate and require steady hands.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • One to two years of lab experience with similar experiments.
  • Some experience with handling of mice, in vivo experiments with mice, behavioral training of mice.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency

If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
