Research Technologist

The Johns Hopkins University Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Technologist who will work with a team that includes other technicians, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator and other laboratory members, the successful candidate will be responsible for performing experiments and analysis. Work requires the basic use of scientific methods and procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. The position requires a basic understanding of the theory behind experiments and the application of analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention. The successful applicant must have the ability to work well with a team of lab scientists as well as independently.


Special Duties & Responsibilities

  • Independently perform routine research testing and contribute to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment.
  • Use basic science knowledge to learn and apply techniques/methods of the lab.
  • Perform laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction; may require techniques associated with molecular biology.
  • May be responsible for tissue bank inventory and management.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood
  • Operate lab computers for data entry and extraction.
  • Utilize in vivo models in experiments following experimental protocols, monitor animals and maintain health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines.
  • Clip and tag mice for genotyping, sacrifices and dissect animal remains as required.
  • Prepare tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques.
  • Maintain accurate data records.
  • Prepare solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels, orders material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
