Research Technologist

The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology is looking for a Research Technologist who will perform routine lab processes and follow routine protocols under close supervision. The position will be dedicated to routine laboratory work, such as generation and testing of laboratory reagents, organization, maintenance and ordering of stocks. In addition, working with laboratory mice, maintaining mouse colonies, weaning cages, mouse genotyping, bleeding of mice and necropsies to assist with experiments. Will assist with experiments, such as sample preparation and analysis.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Routine laboratory work (50% activity) includes preparing solutions and media following standard formulas and procedures, maintaining stocks and organizing fridges and freezers, including maintaining data sheets for stocks, preparing drug stocks, ordering of supplies.
  • Laboratory maintenance includes maintaining lab organization, arranging for repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and complying with biohazard safety standards.
  • Mouse colony handling and oversight (35% effort), genetic screen of transgenic mice, set up breeders and wean. Keep mouse colony size according to laboratory needs
  • Flow cytometry (15% activity). Mouse necropsy, preparation of mouse tissue, staining and running of flow cytometry panels.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required the experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond High School Diploma or graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences, or equivalent coursework, and more than 1 year of mouse handling work.
  • Prior lab research experience at the graduate level and/or beyond.
  • Prior experience working with mice, and/or molecular biology desirable.
  • Experience with flow cytometry.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70-$26.25 HRLY ($23.25 Targeted; Commensurate w/exp)

Schedule: Monday to Friday: 8:30 am – 5 pm, but Flexible based on weekly experiments

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
