Research Technologist

The Andrew Lab (https://andrewlab.cellbio.jhmi.edu/) seeks a Research Technologist with experience in Drosophila husbandry, immunostaining, microscopy, and molecular biology to join our group in the Department of Cell Biology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. We study early organ formation in Drosophila, with a focus on the salivary glands, tracheae, and germ cells.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual seeking an immersive lab experience in biomedical research before pursuing a PhD or MD. The technologist will work directly with the principle investigator on a project focused on a transcription factor expressed in the early salivary gland that orchestrates the earliest steps of epithelial tube formation. Responsibilities primarily include contributing to experimental design, execution, analysis, and preparation of data for publication. Additional duties include preparing shared reagents, fly stock maintenance, and helping undergraduates and new students learn basic lab operations. The ideal candidate is proactive, highly organized, and excited to support discovery in a collaborative and curiosity-driven environment.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advance studies on the role of the Drop transcription factor in Drosophila salivary gland invagination using immunostaining, classical Drosophila genetics, confocal imaging of fixed and live tissues.
  • Maintain accurate detailed electronic or hard copy lab notebook of findings as well as electronic files of images associated with the project.
  • Prepare and aliquot stock solutions, buffers, and other routine reagents following standardized protocols.
  • Receive and organize lab orders.
  • Help optimize and document lab protocols and experimental workflow.
  • Operate and maintain common laboratory equipment (centrifuges, pH meters, thermocyclers, microscopes, cryostats).
  • Participate in lab meetings, journal clubs, and seminars; contribute to scientific discussions.
  • Collaborate with and support trainees, including assisting with onboarding and training in standard techniques.
  • Communicate clearly with team members to ensure smooth coordination of shared resources and timelines.
  • Comply with formal and informal institutional and group safety and reproducibility policies and practices.
  • Carry out duties and responsibilities with initiative and limited supervision after training.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous hands-on research experience (6 months or more) in an academic or industry setting.
  • Experience with molecular cloning, PCR, biochemistry, immunohistochemistry.
  • Comfortable with standard and confocal imaging.
  • Courses in molecular, cell and developmental biology.
  • Experience maintaining lab stocks, databases, or supply chains in a research setting.
