Research Technologist

General Summary

 

The Research Technologist position is available to work in an Otolaryngology department laboratory at Johns Hopkins University.  The primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:  Will be responsible for independently performing routine research testing and contributing to the general maintenance of the lab, supplies and equipment.  Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab.  Perform laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction.  This may require techniques associated with molecular biology.  May also be responsible for tissue bank inventory and management.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

  • Must operate basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood.  Operates lab computers for data entry and extraction
  • Will utilize in vivo models in experiments following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines 
  • Inoculate tumors, sacrifice and dissect animal remains as required.  Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques.  Maintains accurate data records
  • Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation courses in the workplace.  Completes annual University biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training as appropriate
  • Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Use universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers.  Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures
  • Monitor inventory levels, orders material and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt
  • Assist in the coordination of the Clinical/Translational Research Program in Head and Neck Cancer through several sponsored therapeutic clinical trials which may require interacting with patients and obtaining patient consents and tissue specimens

 

Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field

 

Preferred qualifications

 

Some related post undergraduate work experience preferred

Starting Salary Range: $13.73 - $18.87 p/hr.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
