Research Technologist

General Summary/Purpose:

Under the general supervision of faculty investigator and other laboratory members, performs research laboratory experiments and analysis involving mouse models. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Sets-up experiments based on defined standards. Collects and maintains project data.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows established protocols and utilizes appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments, which may include: behavioral testing in rodents, collecting and processing tissue samples for genotyping (PCR), assisting with animal surgeries and cardiac perfusions, processing brain samples for immunohistochemistry.
  • Also responsible for breeding transgenic and knockout mice and will assist in scheduling experimental procedures.
  • Will demonstrate and train others in the proper use/operation of laboratory/behavioral techniques and equipment.
  • Other duties include keeping records of studies, compiling tables/data sets of experimental results and performing basic statistics, charts and graphs. After training will be able to calibrate, troubleshoot and perform routine repair and maintenance of equipment.
  • Participate in developing new protocols but will strictly monitor laboratory processes to maintain quality standards for the already established protocols.
  • Assist with animal husbandry of the laboratory mouse colony.
  • General laboratory upkeep for cleanliness and safety.
  • Responsible for routine operational activities such as reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, preventative maintenance of equipment, etc.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of good lab practices strongly preferred.
  • Some related research laboratory experience strongly preferred.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

  • Uses various software applications, such as, email, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and software for data analysis.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

 

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
