Research Technologist

General Summary/Purpose:

 

The successful applicant will provide technical assistance to two laboratories: Lab A, that conducts molecular and celullular experiments to probe the control of transcription at the molecular level, and Lab B that probes the pharmacokinetics of compunds with antimalarial activity by quantitative liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

In Lab A, after training by laboratory staff, the successful applicant will clone, express, and purify chimeric binding proteins associated with transcription, and perform SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, and other biochemical/molecular preparations and assays as they arise.  Specific cell immunostaining and microscopic data collection may be performed.  Tasks in Lab B will include use of UPLC in conjunction with mass spectrometer detection to assay drug concentrations in biological samples.

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  • In Lab A, the Research Technologist, following procedures and experimental plans under the supervision of a faculty investigator and other laboratory staff, will prepare molecular and cellular components and perform experiments using those components and requisite laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Experiments will include expression of chimeric eukaryotic proteins, extraction and purification of molecules from a range of human and animal cells, insect cells protozoa, yeast, and bacteria, cell culture, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence microscopy, protein expression, protein purification, and protein gel electrophoresis.
  • Accurately records experimental procedures and experimental outcomes and reports outcomes at routine internal laboratory group meetings.
  • In Lab B, the Research Technologist, following procedures and experimental plans under the supervision of a research technologist and faculty investigator, will assay drug concentrations in biological samples by LC-MS/MS methods. 
  • Preparing template spreadsheets for sample analysis; thawing, aliquoting, processing, and loading samples for analysis; programming and monitoring assay runs; downloading and processing quantitative results. 
  • Also included is routine startup, maintenance, and shutdown of the instrumentation. 
  • In both labs the successful applicant will be responsible (with other laboratory staff) for routine laboratory maintenance, preparing solutions and reagents, and preparing sterile media for cell and tissue culture.
  • Uses sterile technique to prepare culture reagents and perform cell experiments.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and instruments used in research experiments.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders materials and supplies.
  • After training, carries out day-to-day experiments and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes day-to-day decisions and establishes work priorities.

PCR, electrophoresis, sterile cell culture hoods, centrifuges, microscopes, imagers, computers, LC-MS/MS

 

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

 

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related fields.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.
  • Two years of relevant laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience in Biomedical research, cell culture, HPLC or UPLC chromatography, mass spectrometry.
  • Related independent biomedical research experience as a student and/or post-undergraduate. Skill with microscopic image capture, and analysis and graphing software is desirable. Experience in programming language like R will preferred.

 

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Molecular cloning and eukaryotic expression, sterile cell culture. 
  • Familiarity with liquid chromatography, facility with Excel software.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Pipetting skills are required.
  • Applicant must be willing to carry out experiments involving protein handeling and recombinant protein preparation, and sample extraction with organic solvents.
  • Experience in working with sterile technique.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
