Research Technologist

We are seeking a Research Technologist who will perform routine lab processes and follow routine protocols under close supervision.  This position will be responsible for managing rodent sleep fragmentation experiments that include muscle testing, cognitive testing and immune function testing. Will operate standard equipment; use standard procedures for specific laboratory tests and preparation techniques.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine research activities and analysis, maintain a high level of organization, contribute to general maintenance of the laboratory, and maintain accurate records.
  • Assist with immune cell isolation procedures and cell staining for flow cytometry.
  • Perform behavioral testing in rodents using standard neurobehavioral tests.
  • Perform RNA isolation and qPCR to assess gene expression levels.
  • Independently compile and analyze research data using various statistical computer software applications.
  • Coordinate and maintain data reports and database files on progress of research.
  • May receive, inventory, enter, and organize collected data.
  • Significant contributions which lead to authorship on publications and oral/poster presentation of novel data will be highly encouraged.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians: assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation, ordering supplies, and maintaining safety compliance.
  • Complete any required training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Ability and comfort with conducting research with rodents.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Research experience with rodents.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
