Research Technologist

We are seeking a Research Technologist. Under the general supervision of Dr. Valsamo Anagnostou in the Thoracic Oncology Program at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins, the candidate will be responsible for handling and processing blood and tumor specimens acquired in the Thoracic Oncology Biorepository. Being part of a multi-disciplinary group with unique expertise in precision oncology, cancer genomics, liquid biopsies and data science, the candidate will work together with a large group of labs and clinical researchers to understand tumor evolution by multi-omic tissue analyses and liquid biopsies. The candidate will also be responsible for bio-specimen and laboratory data quality control and entry in established databases and information retrieval from multiple resources.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience.
  • Follow established procedures and protocols for bio-specimen procurement, operate lab computers for data entry and maintain accurate data records.
  • Responsible for handling blood and tumor specimens from various clinical trials and will follow established procedures or protocols utilizing aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.
  • Use basic understanding of theory behind experiments and apply basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
  • Monitor inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures and be responsible for laboratory data entry and information retrieval from multiple online databases.
  • Must be able to communicate well and work with teams.


Minimum Qualifications
  • BS/BA, or equivalent, in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.
  • Some experience required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Six months of post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project, not related to normal course requirements preferred but not required.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
