Research Technologist

We are seeking a Research Technologist. This position is available in the Siliciano Laboratory, Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. The Siliciano Laboratory studies the mechanism of persistence in HIV-1 infection. In this position, the individual will primarily assist with the development and evaluation of new methods for detecting and quantifying latent HIV in infected donors. This position provides an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated individual to develop advanced skills in molecular virology and translational research. It is ideal for individuals interested in pursuing graduate or medical school after one to three years in the laboratory. Opportunities to present results at scientific meetings or in research publications may be available. The successful applicant must be willing to work with blood samples from HIV-infected donors. Extensive training on safe handling practices will be provided.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Principal Investigators, together with lab technicians and graduate students, on research projects employing the following techniques:

  • Processing of blood samples from HIV-infected donors in a biosafety level 2+ laboratory.
  • Sterile tissue culture technique in a biosafety level 2+ laboratory.
  • Molecular biology techniques, including qPCR, digital PCR, and sequencing.
  • Maintain well-organized experimental records.
  • Participate in research group meetings.
  • May assist in recruiting blood donors and maintaining relevant supplies, reagents, and cell lines.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or a related field.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior laboratory experience with an emphasis in basic molecular biology and cell biology techniques including, but not limited to: DNA sequencing and analysis, qPCR, cloning, cell culture and primary cell work.
  • Some related post-undergraduate experience or education

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
