Research Technologist

The Department of Surgery is seeking a Research Technologist that will be a member of the investigative team in a busy academic laboratory in the Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, studying cancer immunology and developing new cancer immunotherapies to benefit patients. The applicant will process human blood/tissue specimens, perform ELISAs and flow cytometry, be responsible for independently conducting experiments under the supervision of senior staff, and contribute to general maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Follows established lab procedures and protocols precisely to perform experiments.
  • Uses sterile techniques as required.
  • Processes, stores and logs human clinical trial bio-specimens (blood and other specimens) with meticulous care and accuracy.
  • Performs flow cytometry, including staining, data acquisition and analysis with FlowJo or similar software.
  • Assists with immunoassays and molecular biology assays.
  • Assists with research projects, published journal database searches, and troubleshooting.
  • Maintains sophisticated lab equipment.
  • Operates lab computers for data entry and analysis.
  • Maintains accurate, clear and detailed data records in hard copy and electronically.
  • Must be able to communicate well and work with teams.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

 


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field required.
  • At least one year of post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent undergraduate research project not related to normal course requirements.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint software required.

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience and/or knowledge of in vitro cell culture, flow cytometry, immunoassays (e.g., ELISAs) and/or molecular biology techniques a plus.

 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of Windows computers and Microsoft Office applications.

 

Any specific physical requirements for the job:

  • May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, usually less (example: liquid nitrogen freezer racks or supply boxes). Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to other locations on campus to conduct experiments and/or retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens.
  • The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glassware, and/or glass slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory workstations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment.
  • Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exists, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Able to read and understand all Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work areas. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment. Research may include animal and human products, nucleic acids, radiation protocols and other bio-hazardous materials. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
