Research Technologist
We are seeking a Research Technologist in the Division of Cardiology. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator, the individual will be responsible for performing laboratory tasks and complete routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures. Additionally, the individual must be capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results to carry on a project investigating cardiovascular disease.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Responsible for all aspects of a working cardiology laboratory including managing and performing experiments and general laboratory organization and upkeep.
- With direction from Dr. Ranek and assistance from other lab members as necessary, the research technologist will be expected to set-up and perform experiments based on defined standards, the collection of project data, analyzing and interpreting results, making conclusions based on the collected data, and designing follow-up experiments.
- The research technologist may also play a role in experiments/projects that utilize animal models. This role will include both project specific animal procedures as well as assisting with maintaining the lab’s own mouse colonies. Any required training for this aspect of the job will be provided by the laboratory or through resources available at the University.
- Utilizing standard procedures and developed laboratory protocols, the position will be required to run lab tests and complete measurements as assigned.
- Troubleshoots common problems involved in routine research assays to gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
- Use of basic scientific knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab and/or new techniques/methods.
- Careful record keeping of sample information and results to guarantee quality of experimentation.
- Accountable for laboratory management, involving tracking supply inventories and ensuring availability of laboratory reagents and material.
- Carries out routine equipment maintenance and upkeep.
- Ensures laboratory efficiency by following set protocols for lab cleanliness, organization and safety regulations.
- May scientifically contribute to writing of manuscripts and grants. Process analyzed data into figures for scientific publications. The individual will be expected to present research findings and data at regularly occurring lab meetings. Will also be asked to help write and/or compile data/figures for peer reviewed as well as potentially present research findings and data at research conferences as directed by the laboratory investigators.
- An interest in helping train and direct students in the laboratory for rotations or summer projects is highly desired, though not required.
- The laboratory is part of a team of collaborating scientists in numerous departments, and seeks to leverage this collective expertise to make an impact on understanding and treating cancers. Therefore, the research technologist will play an important role in the Ranek Laboratory, but will also work within a greater team of highly collaborative and engaging physicians and researchers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred
