Assistant Director Academic Enrichment

General summary/purpose:

As part of the Office of Experiential Learning’s (OEL) Academic Enrichment team, the Assistant Director Academic Enrichment will report to the Sr. Associate Director, Academic Enrichment and interact with a variety of people throughout the year including students, prospective students, staff, faculty and instructors, peers at other Johns Hopkins University (JHU) schools, graduate assistants, vendors, and community members.

This position requires the ability to practice independent thinking and creative approach to addressing student needs, engagement, and problem solving. The successful candidate must be able to collaborate, communicate effectively, prioritize multiple tasks, be detailed oriented, and take a proactive approach to work on assignments.

This position reflects a key value of OEL’s work, which is to create transformative learning through establishing and enhancing learning through experience.  OEL encompasses a wide spectrum of activities: Student Success Center, Orientation, Residencies, Community Consulting Lab, Design Teams, Leadership Expeditions, and continuous student onboarding in regards to academic and co-curricular programming and resources. This wide range of responsibilities demands great flexibility, collaboration, and excellent work ethic.  


Note: The Assistant Director Academic Enrichment position is based out of the Harbor East campus located in Baltimore, Maryland. Teleworking options are allowed up to two days per week maximum.


Specific duties & responsibilities:

Main Responsibilities include:

  • Administration of Residency Experiences for all degree and certificate programs; including the Flex MBA courses and Leadership Development Program for Minority Managers (LDP).
  • Supporting end to end Orientation programming; including, Pre-Orientation, Pre-Departure, and Continuous onboarding logistics, implementation, and assessment.


Residencies (45%)

  • Develops and Manage Residency activities for the Flex MBA program and Leadership Development Program (LDP) that include, but are not limited to logistics, communication, budgeting, vendor selection, delivering and creating student sessions and materials, trouble shooting, and ensure that all logistics run as planned online and in person as appropriate
  • Develops and maintains tools to collect, analyze, and report data about the effectiveness of the Residency program as well as other programmatic activities
  • Identifies internal resources to improve students’ experience; develops and executes special initiatives to enrich students’ experience during residencies
  • Collaborates with the Academic Program Directors and Academic Advisers to address students’ questions and concerns for LDP and Flex MBA Residencies.
  • Monitors student success in the program and develops recommendations how to improve student experience
  • Collaborates with faculty on promotion and other activities related to the program \


Orientation Programs and Continuous Onboarding (40%)

  • Support the Sr. Associate Director in developing the overall strategy for onboarding students to Carey, Baltimore, and the DC communities
  • Create, implement and assess a comprehensive menu of orientation, pre-orientation, and pre-departure programs
  • Collaborates campus wide to offer sessions and support student growth and onboarding.
  • Create and/or deliver programs and workshops that support Orientation and onboarding year-round
  • Manage needs for orientation (including pre-departure and pre-orientation) and onboarding to ensure proper execution including but not limited to: room reservations, technical needs, catering, travel, assessment, delivering staff training, managing volunteers, trouble-shooting, and, ensure all logistics run as planned
  • Respond to student inquiries


Office of Experiential Learning Support (10%)

  • Main point of contact to manage and maintain all OEL webpages
  • Support the execution of other OEL activities and school/university-wide activities such as: Admissions events, Commencement
  • As an integral member of both the Integrated Learning department and the Office of Education, works collaboratively across teams as needed in support of new and ongoing programming initiatives.
  • Serve as a backup for Tutortrac and Student Success Center inboxes during peak times


Other duties as assigned (5%)


Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Three years of related experience in areas of student affairs, graduate student life and/or Orientation.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred qualifications:

  • Business school experience
  • Academic program support

  • Travel between locations is required (occasionally for off-site activities). Reliable transportation expected.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
