Senior DevOps Engineer

The Digital Research & Curation Center at Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer  to help us build and deploy resilient software that solves intriguing problems. This role will be responsible for the design, development, support, and evolution of deployment and operations infrastructure within the Digital Research & Curation Center. They will create the systems necessary to effectively and efficiently build, test, release, and deploy software into scalable, reliable, and secure application environments. They will be capable of engaging with projects of varying sizes at any stage in the software lifecycle.

 

The Senior DevOps Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams across all phases of software projects including requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance. They will provide experienced leadership in the design and development of comprehensive, innovative, and integrated solutions.

 

This is a remote position working with a fully remote (and fun) team.

 

Job Scope/Complexity:

  • Responsible for all aspects of software deployment and operations within software projects that are frequently large, long-term, and/or highly complex. Will typically be engaged in multiple projects of varying complexities
  • Leads overall strategy, design, and development of complex systems environments

 

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with software engineering to define and build tooling and automation that simplifies and supports the software development lifecycle, encourages best practices, and smooths the transition to production deployment
  • Propose, scope, and design system infrastructure based on application, scaling, cost, and security requirements
  • Build infrastructure as code to ensure consistent and reliable management of application environments
  • Provision cloud-based infrastructure used to deploy, manage, and scale software applications
  • Design, build, and support efficient CI/CD pipelines
  • Maintain system stability while facilitating a steady flow of software updates and feature deployments
  • Build and manage log and metric capture and analysis systems
  • Optimize system deployments to balance performance, cost, and security concerns
  • Develop system monitoring and alerting capabilities
  • Manage and monitor system access controls and authorization mechanisms
  • Perform systems administration to ensure operating systems, tools, and software remain up-to-date, functional, and secure
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system alerts, failures, and operational inefficiencies
  • Support system and software testing and debugging
  • Manage day-to-day system operations
  • Integrate cloud-based resources and networks with local and distributed infrastructure
  • Provide support and mentoring for engineering staff in the use of DevOps tools and practices

 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Six years related experience
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
  • Note: Direct programming experience while pursuing education may count towards related experienceSignificant undergraduate programming coursework or independent project can be considered as related experience

 

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS certified in one or more disciplines: Solutions Architect, DevOps, Developer, Security
  • Experience managing Java-based application environments
  • Experience utilizing Kubernetes for Docker deployments
  • Experience with monitoring, reporting, and alerting tools
  • Experience building and managing systems in Azure
  • Experience in Linux systems administration
  • Experience managing relational (PostgreSQL/MySQL) and NoSQL databases
  • Experience developing with Python
  • Experience working on open source software project teams
  • Experience with agile methodologies
  • Experience working on a fully remote team
  • Experience provisioning and managing cloud infrastructure with infrastructure as code tooling (e.g. Terraform)
  • Experience building and managing production systems with a broad portfolio of AWS tools and services
  • Experience with container-based deployments using Docker
  • Expertise in at least one high-level programming language
  • Expertise in the use of system automation tools and techniques
  • Experience working with open source tools and technologies
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
