Senior Instructional Designer

General Purpose/Summary:

  • Lead the analysis, design, development, and implementation of complex online courses, ensuring competency alignment among courses to achieve program objectives.
  • Plan, develop, and deliver cognitively sound curriculum content.
    • Coordinate the development of instructional materials that are functional, informative, and consistent with sound instructional design principles, including alignment of educational objectives with content, activities and assessments.
    • Collaborate with teams of writers and subject matter experts to ensure instructional integrity of the course development projects through a method of systematic design and clear course standards and outcomes.
    • Provides recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and online interactive activities.
    • Ensure design consistency and accessibility. Assist department leadership with setting and implementing style consistency standards.
    • Implement international design components for cultural correctness & norms, time zone differences, and language/translation issues
  • Manages multiple complex design projects concurrently. Create project plans and deliver timely results.
    • Conduct necessary project analysis. Make recommendations for departmental project management process.
  • Conduct regular workshops and seminars to educate faculty and SME's on best practices as it pertains to system use, student engagement, and pedagogical teaching methods.
    • May participate in organizing training series or large symposium
  • Research and evaluate new and emerging technologies, instructional design theories, and approaches and policies for potential application to instructional opportunities.



  • Designs and develops instructional projects
    • Working in partnership with subject matter experts (e.g., department Program Managers), develops design documents and/or storyboards outlining instructional objectives, methods and assessment plans
    • Conducts needs analysis and performance analysis to develop learner-centered experiences
    • Advises faculty and staff on effective use of instructional resources for specific projects
    • Collaborates with CTY staff in writing instructional design criteria
  • May mentor or direct other instructional designers, content specialists, web developers, graphic designers, faculty and staff, and/or external partners as needed in complex projects
    • Utilize effective communication skills to communicate frequently and effectively with various project collaborators.
    • Manage project timelines and coordinate with team members and partners to meet project deliverables.
  • Plan, develop, and teach faculty, staff, and associate workshops and other activities on the effective use of web-based resources and tools and multimedia technologies to implement in online and blended delivery.
  • Develops project management plans or works with project management leads to ensure that quality deliverables are produced to meet project timelines
  • Working with the Online Programs team, conducts formative and summative evaluation of instructional content and outcomes
    • Evaluate the instructional effectiveness of programs, courses, and products.
    • Conducts usability and learnability analysis of learning prototypes and environments
  • Track compliance with federal 508 disability regulations. (Section 508 is a part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which requires that electronic and information technology developed, procured, maintained or used by the Federal government be accessible to people with disabilities.)

Degree of independent action performed on the job:

  • Work independently as well as with production team to ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Works closely with subject area Program Manager implementing their objectives.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate degree in educational technology, instructional design, instructional technology, curriculum design, or other related discipline is required.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience designing, developing, and managing online, blended or other technology-mediated instruction. Significant additional related experience may substitute for advanced degree. Experience developing content for advanced / gifted learners highly desired.
  • Experience developing content for LMS delivery highly desired.
  • Effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills; ability to predict, identify, and resolve issues in a timely and effective manner.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well with other team members.

Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent project management skills, ability to set and fulfill priorities, independence, and time-management capabilities. This job requires a person who is a self-starter, who sets goals for herself/himself and members of the teams s/he may lead, develops strategies for meeting them, and achieves them with minimal oversight.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate teams of high level professionals (including faculty, staff and other technical specialists) from multiple departments in design, development, and execution of funded projects.
  • Ability to deal with multiple constituencies in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and willing to contribute wherever needed to ensure team success.
  • Background of instruction or development in a learning management system.
  • Experience managing and motivating a geographically diverse workforce.


Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.
  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external customers and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.
  • Position also requires a degree of mobility common to working in an office environment; bending, kneeling or standing during events and presentations may be required.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
